By William Mackay: It seems that IBF light welterweight champion Zab Judah wasn’t the second choice for WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (25-1, 17 KO’s) after WBC/WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (27-0, 11 KO’s) turned down the July 23 date to fight Khan. Instead of going after the more relevant bout against the still in his prime Judah, Khan and Golden Boy Promotions, Khan’s promoter, tried to get a fight with fading star Erik Morales (51-7, 35 KO’s), but Morales reportedly turned down a big $1.5 million offer to fight Khan, according to boxing news from Dan Rafael at ESPN.
It’s unclear why the recently beaten Morales would turn down the money but it could be that his eye injury from his loss to Marcos Maidana still isn’t healed up enough for him to fight Khan so soon. It may be a good thing that Khan isn’t going to be fighting Morales because that would be a fight very similar to when Khan fought a past his best Marco Antonio Barrera in 2009 instead of someone that in their prime. Khan got staggered in that fight early on and because of a headbutt, the fight was stopped prematurely in the 5th round with Khan winning by a technical decision.
Khan said this at espn: “First Bradley didn’t want the fight. Then Morales didn’t want the fight. He was offered a great deal, a lot of money. Morales could have tried to become the first four weight champion from Mexico. It would have been a great fight.”
I got an idea. Why doesn’t Khan offer the fight Breidis Prescott, Maidana or Mike Alvarado? Nevermind, I already know the answer. It won’t happen.
Zab Judah is looking to be the one that Khan will face next. He’s a lot more dangerous than Morales, which may be one of the reasons why he wasn’t the number 2 choice after Bradley decided not to take the fight with Khan. Judah and Khan have agreed on a 45-55 deal with Khan getting the larger share of the purse split. The only thing left to decide is the venue. Judah is hoping to get the fight to take place at Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Khan wants it in Las Vegas, Nevada.
