By Jim Dower: At Friday’s weigh-in for Saturday’s Super Six semifinals bout between WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (27-1, 20 KO’s) and challenger Glen Johnson (51-14-2, 35 KO’s), the 33-year-old Froch scaled in at 167.5. Johnson, 42, weighed 166, two pounds under the 168 pound limit. The fight will be taking place at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
There had been talk recently that Johnson was having problems having problems making the weight limit. However, he looked great and didn’t have the boiled down weight drained look that is typical of fighters that have to dehydrate to make weight. It appears that the talk was more gamesmanship as usual.
Froch is the favorite to win Saturday’s fight against the older Johnson. However, Froch hasn’t looked good in two of his three Super Six fights, so you can’t count out Johnson. Froch struggled to beat Andre Dirrell by a controversial 12 round decision in his first fight in the Super Six tourney, and then was beaten in his second fight against Mikkel Kessler last year. Then Froch beat Arthur Abraham by a lopsided 12 round decision late last year. The Abraham fight is the only one in which Froch looked and performed good in the tourney.
