Farewell to a friend

Though he walked on 4 legs and choose to only do what he felt like, my life got a little dimmer today as i had to put down a kitten we had fostered since he was 1 day old.

Simon was never suppose to grow on me. He was only coming for a little while, til he was big enough to find a forever home. He was polite, kind and caring. He never miss behaved. Never got into anything he wasnt suppose to be in. We cried the day he left for the shelter but knew that if we kept him, we would not be able to look after others in his situation.

One day when we were walking in the local mall, we say simon and his brother in a tiny little cage all sad and sick looking. We went up to them and they remembered us right away. We could not live with them like that so we bought them and took them home. Months passed and we tried to find them forever homes ourselves but nothing ever worked out. We could not understand how a kitten so loving and tolerant could not find some family to love him. Finally we gave up and decided to keep Simon and his brother. Many fond memories of snuggles lasting for hours. So long infact that my legs or shoulders would end up being sore.

The last couple of weeks were bad for Simon. He would sleep all the time and cry when his brother would pick on him. We took him to the vet and he spent a week there. When we went to see him, he was up and looked better though still was sick. We took him home for the weekend and the snuggle fest continued.

He only ate once this weekend. His belly was swollen so we took him back to the vet today. When i was done my shift, my wife told me that Our simon was very sick and was not going to get better. We went down to the vet and spent as much time with him as we could before they closed. Never once did he stop purring and head butting us. Athough i am a big man, i could not hold back the tears as the vet told me what she told my wife. I told simon i was sorry and petted and kissed him goodbye for the last time. I could not be there for when they put you to sleep and for that I am sorry Simon. I will miss you dearly and will think of you often. I am sorry that i could not do anything other than end your pain. You will never be forgotten and my life and lap will always be a little emptier without you around

Sorry to hear about the family member Mabs. I know how it feels, i had to put down one of my boxers do to cancer last year. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

your decision was a tough one, and knowing you, this would be very upsetting, but Mabs....you and your wife's hearts are in the right place, and you will continue to do what you do , and don't stop, for you give life and comfort to those loving animals, my heart grieves with you, dont be too dis heartened. there will be days like today, and yes you will get over it, in time..keep up the great work.....proud of you my friend....................W/H. I am sorry to hear about your cat simon Mabs....its always hard to say goodbye to a loved one and our pets are just as much as our family then our own blood....i know simon is in a better place

I'm sorry to hear about Simon, mabs. Although I've gone through the loss of my little friends through the years, I've yet to be put in the position to have to make that decision myself. It was made once for me with my first dog. I currently share my life with four cats and they are great companions. I feel your loss my friend.

Mabs, very sorry to hear of the loss. My birthday 6/6/53 your loss 6/6/11. We have 3 cats & 1 dog, all rescues from abusive homes after having to do the
same NOBLE thing of putting my BELOVED BLACK LAB down after him being a faithful companion of 14 years. The replacemants are loved and they know it
but, I still miss my Black Lab "LUCKY".

that reminds me of a stuffed cat toy that i found while lego shopping. i slung it over my shoulder and walked up to my wife. she said at the time it was too painful as it looked just like Simon did except for the over sized eyes. Simon loved to rest his front legs over your shoulder and hang there. too funny of a cat. Never seen a cat that likes to sit up as a human. thanks for the memories Fonger.

I feel Your pain as I to have had to put down a little family member. Spooky developed Feline Leukemia and I had no idea that was the problem. He was everywhere 4me went, whether the front yard, back yard or any room in the house. He was a Maine Coon with long fur. I buried Him in His Fav Spot in the front yard where the Sun hits everyday...! Don't feel Bad about shedding a tear or two, All MEN cry sometimes...! :thumbsup:

Hey Mabs,
Dude I am sorry for your loss... I know what it is like to loose Furry Friends its
not a good feeling at all and especially when they grow on you. It is always the ones
that you say i am not going to get attached to that you DO get attached too..... I
hope your pain has eased some..... I wish you the Best and Fondest memories of
Simon.... I know this doesn't ease up the pain but I do hope your pain and loss
does ease over time....
