By John F. McKenna (McJack): Juan Manuel Marquez’ (53-5-1, 39 KO’s) forty five second demolition of Likar Ramos (24-4, 18 KO’s) last Saturday night fooled absolutely no one. It was thought going into his fight with Ramos that an impressive victory by Marquez would give him a psychological edge going into his November 12 showdown with Manny Pacquiao (53-2-2, 38 KO’s).
Unfortunately for Marquez, things did not go exactly go as planned. Ramos did a very poor acting job and fell down at the first solid punch by Marquez, cushioning his fall on his way to the canvas. The fight did not accomplish either of its intended purposes. Firstly, Ramos’ performance at getting knocked out was so unconvincing that it will do little to boost Marquez confidence. Secondly, any hopes that the fight would build ticket sales for the Marquez – Pacquiao trilogy, were quickly dashed.
From Bob Arum’s end, Marquez – Ramos was a big disappointment, whether he cares to admit it or not. Obviously Arum wanted a Marquez win. But he wanted an exciting fight which would show off Marquez’ skill.
To be honest Arum has run out of marquee opponents for Manny Pacquiao. That is why Arum had to drag out Shane Mosley and build him up as a viable opponent for Pacquiao. Mosley had name recognition, but at thirty nine years old he had little hope of beating Pacman. After his 3rd round knockdown, Mosley got on his bicycle and ran the rest of the night. At one point he begged his trainer to stop the fight. He knew he had nothing left.
Arum even had to sell Mosley as an opponent to Pacquiao and trainer Freddie Roach, who against their better judgment finally agreed to take him as an opponent.
Pacquiao is a different fighter than he was in 2004 and 2008. In 2008 he was having his own problems on the scales prior to his fights. Check out his weigh in pictures for the Marquez fights. He looks emaciated. Now fast forward to his most recent fights. He has put on weight and muscle since 2008, but has retained his speed. In addition, Manny is much more effective at using his right hand in his more recent fights and is a much stronger fighter.
Bob Arum will launch the much ballyhooed world tour on Sept 3 for the Marquez – Pacquiao match. By fight time he will have convinced almost everyone that Marquez has a real shot at victory. That is what promoters do.
