Germany is marking the 50th anniversary of the construction of the Berlin Wall and commemorating the victims killed at the concrete barrier between West and East Berlin, The Associated Press reports.

At a televised ceremony where Berliners commemorated the anniversary Saturday, Mayor Klaus Wowereit told citizens it is important the 140-kilometre-long wall that once tore apart the country remain ever-present in their memories.

"It is our shared responsibility to keep the memory alive and to pass it on to the coming generations as a reminder to stand up for freedom and democracy to ensure that such injustice may never happen again," Wowereit said.

The construction of the wall began on Aug. 13, 1961, during a period when Cold War tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union were at a peak.

Berlin remained divided into east and west for 28 years, until the wall was finally collapsed on Nov. 9, 1989.

What are your memories of the Berlin Wall? Do you remember where you were the day it fell?

I remember the day they put it up, the day they took it down was a better day for the world.

And where I was when it fell was on console broadcasting it to the world.
