yep, it's true, right now there is one transponder on 91w that was changed a couple days ago from standard DVB to Turbo 8PSK

91w° TP 5 changed from SR: 20000 5/6 FEC QPSK to SR: 21500 2/3 FEC 8PSK

TP 5 is 12282 for those that have an HD box and want to switch it yourselves

So what do we do each time they make a change?

you lose the channels on that tranwsponder unless you have an HD box

Has Bell started to ship out replacement HD receivers (or normal ones that will receive 8PSK) for their customers?

If not then there will be plenty of SD channels available on 91W till Nimiq 6 gets there next year, then 80% of the US will loose this bird.

The end of analog is Sept 1st in Quebec.. Dont know if its the same in all the Canadian provinces..
Switchover in Europe was done by provinces or regions.. The US was a simultaneous transfer. Canada ?? Time will tell..

I wish they never went to digital, just when my buddy's 65 light years away start getting the Ted Mack amateur hour they will have to switch to digital in 65 years, not fair, it's going to be expensive to ship out the analog to digital receivers that far.

all the Bev transponders on satellite 91 were active so if you are seeing a no-signal message on TP5 you have definitely lost some channels

I know of at least two areas that will remain analog.. U have to read the fine print...lol

A C&P from the link provided..
"By August 31, 2011, Canadian local television stations in certain areas will stop broadcasting in analog and will start broadcasting in digital"

Over-the-air television stations in other areas may also be switching to digital by August 31, 2011, even if they don’t have to.my guess is even the smaller markets will either switch or shut down

One of my friends lives in Sydney Nova Scotia .. They will be staying analog and they will not be shutting down in the near future..
The Capital Halifax NS is the only one to go Digital. The many smaller stations in Nova Scotia will remain operational analog.

Quite a few in Newfoundland that will not change..

Also the ones up North// will not change.. Nunivet/Ranken Inlet/Equaliut(spelling)

They have received exemptions to stay analog..I am sure I could find more but suffice it to say that not "all" will change on that day or before.. :)

No ..Your point was that 'all' stations in Canada will be digital by that date..
That is incorrect..
What happens in the future remains to be seen.. and actually I agree with u that the gravy train may stop ..But I can't agree with u it will stop on or before that date.

BTW,.. Sorry Timester for hijacking your thread.. My bad.. :)

Bell will not have to replace any of the newer receivers. both current HD boxes support Turbo 8PSK, i think the current SD box does aswell. older boxes will most likely need to be swapped out, although i don't think there are that many older boxes left being used

Believe USA went all OTA digital in June of 2009. Before the transition we were offered two coupons per house ($40USD per) for a analog-to-digital conversion stb box. It was postponed once before the actual June date because of shortage of the conversion boxes.

If you where to elect the straight digital to analog boxes (many suppliers) plus the coupon it would be free. Of course if you wish the HDTV/1080P HDMI /5.1 output would cost you an extra 80 dollars or so.

Couple of side notes: the same HDTV boxes are expensive, with no coupons can be 180 USD; also cable has a grace period to go all digital as their extra "air" bandwidth is not up for sale. So to receive the so-called basic PLUS (USA, CNN, LMN, ESPN, etc.) you will need a conversion stb also, but with Comcast cable at least they are free.

I believe the cable transition is in late 2012 but do not quote me on that.

another transponder on Nimiq 1 has been changed over to Turbo 8PSK and has 8 test channels uplinked, the audio on those channels are unencrypted

Tim,

when you say audio is unencrypted on these channels are they audio only channels with no video? Like in music or just the DD audio of a AV channel?

not exactly. there is a vpid on the channels, meaning there is video. not even subs can get the test channels. when i say the audio is unencrypted, i mean that any fta receiver with an 8psk module can hear the audio. no iks required

there are two tps on 91 that are t8psk, 12282 and 12370

12282 does have some HD channels, MLBH7 (1487) and some test feeds
12370 are simple test feeds.

Yes, should be the same as a 211 on the other side. Which is MPEG4 & 8PSK compatible, smooth sailing for years.

you need to post your question in the correct forum and not a three year old thread
