....A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of a pensioner who was attacked as he tried to stamp out a fire during the London riots, Scotland Yard said.

Richard Bowes, 68, died in hospital just before midnight on Thursday after he was attacked in Spring Bridge Road in Ealing, west London, during Monday's unrest.

Officers investigating the death have arrested the 16-year-old on suspicion of murder and four counts of burglary and a 31-year-old woman on suspicion of perverting the course of justice, police said.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said that both suspects are in custody in a south London police station.

A 22-year-old man arrested on August 12 on suspicion of murder, rioting and for three burglaries has since been bailed, police added.

Detective Chief Inspector John McFarlane said: "This was a brutal incident that resulted in the senseless killing of an innocent man.

"I still need the assistance of the community who may have witnessed the attack on Richard, to come forward and provide information or images they may have recorded on mobile devices. This information could be crucial in catching his killer."

Mr Bowes, who lived alone in Haven Green, Ealing, was placed on a life-support machine following the attack, which took place as violence spread through the capital.

A post-mortem examination conducted on Saturday revealed he died from head injuries sustained during the incident.

A witness said rioters attacked the pensioner when he tried to put out a fire started in a supermarket bin near the Arcadia shopping centre.
