Hotels use specialized outside vendors to provide TV for their customers. That's why a lot of hotel TV seems the same. All it involves is a bank of decoder boxes each set to a single channel all the time and fed into a system where each channel is on a frequency just like cable TV is set up. This avoids customers stealing receivers and service calls to rooms when receivers stop working. Most of these systems use the same cable or satellite services that local home owners use with the addition of info channels from the hotel network, if any.

If you use the CATV setting on your TV you can have as many as 125 channels to look at (if you have a CATV feed with that many channels), is some areas they use a CATV feed like Lme mentioned, in areas where there is not a CATV feed available you setup a master satellite receiver rack, this looks at as many satellites as needed to fill up the channel list you want, it is mostly "C" band feeds from the commercial side of the satellite, each channel has a dedicated receiver that is set to pick up just one channel, if you want 125 channels you have 125 receivers, (yes you can get switches this big) the outputs of the receivers are fed into a master combiner and distribution amp, then fed to all rooms by coax, no tuner box would be needed.

This is the old way of doing it, the new way is to get a commercial subscription to Dish or Dave, they install a master receiver/dish system and then use a special IF signal (like what comes down your coax from the LNB) fed to special set top boxes (not unlike CATV boxes) to get the channels, that way you can have hundreds of channels, its all in how much you want to pay them.

Ever try connecting a portable DVD player to the front composite inputs of those "Hotel TVs"? I have and they are rendered inoperative. It doesn't work. When I inquired at the front desk, they said they just won't work. I was hooking up the DVD player for the kids. I think they do that so you have to purchase their PPV movies. Next time I'm going to take a RF modulator and see if I can input the DVD through the coax? . . . ? Never know, it is a "Hotel TV"? . . . ? LOL !
