PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, MAN. - The local RCMP detachment had to be evacuated Tuesday afternoon after a live hand grenade was turned in to police.

A 43-year-old Portage la Prairie man had been tilling soil on his rural property when he uncovered a hand grenade, which appeared to be live. He turned it in to the Portage RCMP so it could be disposed of.

“He brought it to the detachment simply with the intent of turning it in to the police to make it safe,” said Const. Miles Hiebert of the Winnipeg RCMP.

But police responded by evacuating the building and erecting barricades.

Explosive disposal experts arrived and disposed of the grenade properly.

“They have given it a cursory examination it does appear to be a genuine live hand grenade,” Hiebert said, adding people should not bring similar items to police.

“Should anyone ever come across anything like this again, any type of military ordinance or anything like that while they’re doing yard work, leave it in place. Don’t touch it, call the RCMP and we’ll go to your location and we’ll dispose of it there
