By Jason Kim: Marcos Maidana (30-2, 27 KO’s) was given the offer by Golden Boy Promotions to step in and face Erik Morales (51-7, 35 KO’s) for the vacant WBC light welterweight title on Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Victor Ortiz card next week on September 17th in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Maidana, however, reportedly refused the offer to fight on the prestigious fight card, and will instead be fighting Petr Petrov, a fighter that few boxing fans have ever heard of at the Sosciedad Aleman, Villa Ballester, Buenos Aires, Argentina. In fairness to Maidana, perhaps he had already signed for the Petrov fight and was bound by the fight contract, although he should have put in an escape route in case something better came up like the Morales rematch.
Some boxing fans have reacted negatively towards Maidana’s refusal to fight Morales again, seeing him as afraid of Morales and not wanting to experience the pain and the grueling nature of a fight with “El Terrible.”
Maidana obviously has his reasons for declining the fight, but if it was because of not being in top shape, it’s hard to imagine how Maidana couldn’t have been in tip top shape. After all, he was training very hard up to a week before his previously scheduled August 27th fight with Robert Guerrero.
That fight was cancelled after Guerrero tore up his left rotator cuff while sparring and week before the fight, making it necessary for him to pull out of the bout. it’s been three weeks since the Guerrero fight went down the drain, and Maidana should be still in good enough shape to fight an aging fighter like Morales you would think.
It doesn’t really make any sense to turn down the Morales fight to take on a little known guy like Petrov. If Maidana did this for his fans in Argentina, that’s nice but it seems like a bad career move to turn down a huge fight for another title agiant Morales to instead fight someone that boxing fans have never even heard of. If Maidana’s goal is to try and pressure Amir Khan into fighting him again then he really missed a perfect opportunity to apply some pressure by beating Morales in a rematch and capturing another title. That would have been the ideal thing to do instead of fighting Petrov.
As for Morales, his promoters are still looking for a replacement opponent for him so that he can remain on the Mayweather-Ortiz card. Whoever that fighter is, he’s going to be a lucky one because he’ll be getting a lot of attention and a chance to capture the WBC belt.

After beating Morales and not even be consider for the vacant championship fight, I would have done the same.

Khan rips Maidana,Bradley and Vargas

WBA/IBF junior welterweight champion Amir Khan is taking no prisoners. The British superstar lashed out at several of his recent critics. The first boxer on Khan's verbal junior welterweight hitlist - is WBA "regular' champion Marcos Maidana. Khan won a close decision over Maidana in 2010, a clash which received "Fight of The Year" honors.

Khan attacked Maidana over turning down the opportunity to fight Erik Morales in a rematch on September 17 on the Floyd Mayweather-Victor Ortiz card in Las Vegas. The vacant WBC title would have been within Maidana's grasp, who won a close decision over Morales in April, but already had a fight scheduled in Argentina on September 23rd when he was approached with the opportunity to face Morales.

"Wow, Maidana refuses to fight Morales on the Mayweather/Ortiz card. I'd jump at that chance. how could you say no to the WBC world title? And I know Maidana never wanted to give [Victor] Ortiz a rematch too."

WBO champion Timothy Bradley received some verbal leather as well. Khan continues to bait Bradley to fight him on December 10th, the scheduled return date for the British fighter. Their negotiations for a July unification fell apart earlier this year, and Bradley has since been sued by his former promoters Gary Shaw and Thompson Boxing.

"Bradley will always be a b*tch but if he decides to grow some balls and fight me in December - I'll give him the respect for stepping up before I b*tch slap him all over the ring for making me wait."

A few days ago Mayweather was asked if was willing to face Khan. The former five division champion advised Khan to fight unbeaten Jessie Vargas before being considered. Vargas is promoted by Mayweather. And Khan has advised Vargas to fight Maidana.

"Never heard of Jessie Vargas until Floyd Mayweather mentioned that I have to fight him. He looks good, yes, but only has 16 fights. He's a prospect and I'm a unified world champion. If Jessie Vargas fights and gets past Marcos Maidana - then I'll fight him. Like Floyd said - 'you have to earn it.'

I agree with Fib,,,, Maidana beat him once already.... why fight him again? nothing to gain. If he beats him again... it will be..."well, he beat an old man again"
We gotta keep recycling fighters and fights.
Ha ha ha... i cracked up at Khans statements above... he really wants Bradley bad.... feelings aren't mutual.

Maidana hasn`t let anybody down...except the promotion dept of Morales. I resent Jason Kim`s breakdown of Maidana`s character and his intentions because Kim admittedly knows nothing of a prior commitment or Maidana`s promise to Argentinian fans etc....yet Kim is free to babble on re Maidana`s poor career choice. All because Kim wants a story and if there isn`t one---he`ll make one.
Amir Khan is babbling again-----seems like Khan will say anything about anyone at anytime just to get on that scorecard or get more publicity. Khan has enough weapons to make a case and he should allow them to do most of the talking. The more Khan yaps it seems the less are listening. Khan will get his shots, he`ll earn them in the ring not on the talk circuit. Khan should do well to remember------sometimes when you go fishing you better remember to bring bait big enough just in case you get the "big one".
