View Full Version : Floyd Mayweather teaches Victor Ortiz a lesson

By John J. Raspanti, Doghouse Boxing: The event titled “Star Power” has been over for a few days now but the debate still rages over ethics, morality and sportsmanship inside the squared circle.
Did Floyd Mayweather do anything wrong when he unloaded on Victor Ortiz while the then welterweight champion was gazing lovingly at referee Joe Cortez?
Let us build up the suspense here. I’ll refrain from saying anything about defending yourself at all times.
Oops, I said it.
So no, the Mayweather left hook and right cross were legal, and Victor Ortiz has only himself to blame.
Ortiz is a great kid with a hard-luck story. His redemption following his loss to Marcos Madaina has been admirable. It became pretty apparent though that he was woefully unprepared for the biggest fight of his career.
Mayweather did his part by engaging in an ugly argument with his father as the camera's rolled.
The comparisons were obvious. Roger Mayweather’s tense relationship with brother Floyd Sr. and Ortiz trainer Danny Garcia on the outs with his younger brother Robert.
Maybe it’s time to watch East Of Eden again because this sure sounds like Kane and Abel times two.
Mayweather as always was the star of the show. From the outside, his life can resemble a circus – with all the numerous criminal and civil cases pending, and the never-ending conversations about why he and fellow superstar Manny Pacquiao have yet to fight. Mayweather ignores it all and destroys all comers.
Ortiz lost his concentration in the fateful fourth round. The lapse was unforgivable for a professional fighter, and Ortiz would pay a painful price.
Mayweather was working his plan to perfection by beating Ortiz repeatably to the punch with lead right hands and an impenetrable defense. He was doing just what he said he would do, stand in front of Ortiz and punch.
To his credit, Ortiz never stopped trying. He had some success when he bulled Mayweather into the ropes and fired some punches. He tried the same maneuver in round four with disastrous results. With Mayweather again against the ropes Ortiz turned himself into a human missile by blatantly propelling the top of his head into Mayweather’s mouth.
The intent of this will always be something of a mystery. It looked like Ortiz, frustrated by his inability to connect solidly on Mayweather’s chin, tried a street move.
Mayweather was angry (even though Ortiz had kissed him and apologized)
After penalizing Ortiz and asking a ringside official if the bell had rung to end the round, Cortez said, “Lets go.” Ortiz appeared to apologize once more as Mayweather placed his gloves on Ortiz’s shoulders, and then uncorked a left hook right hand combo. Ortiz went down hard and was unable to get back up.
In 1927, legendary champion Jack Dempsey knocked out Jack Sharkey while Sharkey complained to the referee.
Asked after the fight about Sharkey dropping his hands and complaining, Dempsey said, “What was I supposed to do write him a letter?”
No letters are coming Victor.
Take it all as a learning experience.

Pretty much sums it up Fib, thanx for the post............The fight-- that wasn`t--was also pretty much what we expected. Ortiz never really had much hope of pulling it off unless he got lucky, he would never have been in there otherwise.

No running, no dancing, no beating around the bush. Floyd went at it flat footer and trading punches with a younger, bigger and stronger Ortiz. You know what, like Marquez said, same thing will happen to Pacquiao. Ifffffffffff........ hehe

That`s one big IFFFFFFF....LOL
but that`s where we`ll disagree... he won`t go toe to toe with PacMan.... at least not early. He`d go for the kill shot if he`s 100% sure he`s got Manny hurt and bad---and other than that I can`t see him doing it. But i`ve been wrong before...back about 1976 I think it was. LMAO

He'll keep Pacman at a distance where he can pound him with straight rights to the head and left hooks to the ears. Pac has fast hands but Floyd's defensive moves will counter and keep pounding with that straight right hands to the face. Just like Marquez, who is much smaller and slower than Floyd, did in the last few rounds of the second match. Juan Manuel has seen both in action, should we consider his opinion? 1976, that 's some time back................

I happened to watch this fight. And my opinion, being legal or not... Mayweather stole it. I seen no acknowledgement by the ref to continue fighting after he called time to penalize Ortiz for the headbutt . In fact, he was still talking to the judge, and paying no attention to either fighter. LOL, if you will notice.... Floyd's right hand didn't miss the REFS head by much over a foot, to get the final shot of those cheap shots in. Listen, I'm not denying that headbutt by Ortiz looked like it was on purpose. And he was still in apology mode (as he should have been, showing good sportsmanship)... when Mayweather took the (extremely cheap) shots.
Not saying the end outcome would have been any different. Mayweather probably would have took the fight on points. But "the Mouth" promised him a rematch , and I hope the kid Ortiz does well when (and if) it happens. I like the way Ortiz, handled the situation, the youngster has class. And Mayweather came out looking like an A-hole once again. Although being an A-hole with an apparent victory.
P.S.
In my opinion if he decides to ever face Pacman... sleep well Floyd .

Hopefully we`ll get to see who`s right someday before either them or us are in a home somewhere LOL.....but I`ll still doubt that he CAN keep Pac away at a distance.

He kept others stronger and bigger than Pac. His defense is so good you can't get a good shot at him. I predict a good fight but Floyd will beat him. We don't put our elderly in homes, we keep them home till they pass. My grandmother passed at the age of 102 in her room, my mother at 94, my kids will see me pass the same way,

if he can't run away all nite from pac he won't last

Stronger and bigger yes....but faster and more relentless??? I don`t think so. Pac, once in the ring is a windmill of punches and is relentless coming forward. PBF will have to be on top of his defensive skills to survive the onslaught thru 10----my biggest question would be does PBF have the power he`d need to stop Pac?..KO power is what I`m thinking he`ll need...........and I don`t see him having it. But neither of us have said anything of cuts---would be a shame but a real possibility that this fight could end re the cut. And then the rematch LOL---lots of $$$$$ here, think about it.
I`ve never stated anywhere who`d win the fight in my opinion----I`ll make that call if and when they get in the ring.

Going back to our constructive conversation, that is exactly what will benefit Floyd, the fact that Pac is coming forward all the time, fast or slow Floyd's defense is great. He'll be able to back up and counter with his best weapon the lead right to the face. Out of that counter we can see blood , the magic word, and things can change in a whisper. You saw that Juan Manuel made him bleed a lot, Floyd will cause a hemorrhage that may stop the fight indeed.

PBF needs room for his defensive skills to be at his best which is the counter...my bet is that thru relentless pursuit and the lack of power of PBF Pac can and will get inside, trap (even for a moment) and unleash the torrent of body work then up to the head in the later rounds. Yes Pac will sustain some damage due to PBF`s amazing defensive skills getting inside and therein lies the chance of PBF---cut him...but cut him enough to stop the fight because after Pac is cut the accelerator mats out to a free for all and PBF certainly wants no part of that.

Analyzing this event is not easy at all but we must be aware that PBF is bigger, stronger, and very hard to hit, specially in the face. It all derived from physical conditioning. I guess that is why Floyd is asking for tight testing measures.
Floyd is yellow as they come!! Floyd is as black as they come, the best athletes in the world are black, is a God given thing.

Every word true..............................till the arms come down from relentless body attack..... then the turtle`s head pops up just seconds before it gets knocked out. Pac can`t hit PBF in the head early..nor will he try...the diff in the fight would be who survives Pac`s body attack (to pop the head) vs PBF`s counter to the head looking for points or the cut.
