BELLEVUE, Wash., -- A charity chosen by a Bellevue, Wash., girl before she died in an auto accident has raised more than $1.26 million for clean water in Africa, the charity said.
Rachel Beckwith had chosen to raise money for charity: water before she died at age 9 of injuries she suffered in a July 20 pileup on Interstate 90, The Seattle Times reported.
Rachel, whose mother opened an account for proceeds to the charity for her ninth birthday in June, had hoped to raise $300 for the charity.
Donations soared after news stories about Rachel's death described her charitable effort.
As of Thursday night, the account had brought in nearly 32,000 donations for a total of $1.267 million, the Times said.
A spokeswoman for charity: water said Thursday the account was closed so proceeds can be used by the charity. A second campaign was to be launched Friday to keep helping people in need, the spokeswoman said.
