“Why is Money Mayweather ahead of Pacquiao on Box rec.com?” inquired Big Steve during our morning jog through Griffith Park:” Isn’t Manny considered the best pound for pound fighter in the world?”

That is a very good question. Widely considered an authority on mystical pound for pound rankings as well as weight divisional rankings, The Ring Magazine has Manny Pacquiao as a number one fighter on the planet with Floyd Mayweather in the second place. Both compete as welterweights. Curiously, The Ring Magazine does not have a welterweight champion with Pacquiao number one and Mayweather number two.

Another well respected website Fightnews.com does not have pound for pound rankings, but has Manny Pacquiao as a Fight news welterweight champion with Floyd Mayweather right behind him.

Going back to BoxRec.com, a site which is well known for its continuous updates and aspiration for accuracy, I discover that Floyd Mayweather is not only ranked as a number one welterweight, but also best pound for pound fighter with Manny Pacquiao number two in both categories.

I question how a semi retired fighter who only fought two times in the last two years be number one? I tried to find an answer on the site where there is a whole section dedicated to rankings formula.

“The "Active" ratings include only those boxers who have had a bout within the past 365 days. (After a year of not fighting, a boxer is automatically designated "inactive" by the BoxRec computer. A boxer is also designated "inactive," or "complete," if he has announced his retirement, even if he may have had a bout within the past 365 days.),” states BoxRec.com.

I keep on reading:” These ratings are not influenced by subjective views or opinions, but are wholly dependent upon the bouts contained in the BoxRec server database. The BoxRec computer re-calculates the ratings at approximately 9:35 GMT every day.” I keep on reading. It gets complicated. I have attention deficit disorder, but I read it and than read it again; still lost. The system is very complicated. I admit, I did not graduate from Harvard, but I do have an engineering degree from San Francisco State University, yet the ranking system of BoxRec completely eludes me.” If at first you don’t succeed, try again,” rings an old adage in my head. So I read it again. Here is item number twenty three that catches my attention: “The ratings are decreased for moving up to higher weight divisions by the square of the reciprocal ratio of the weights limits of the divisions--and they are increased by the same factor for moving down the divisions.”

Still not satisfied I decided to contact the editor for simpler explanation. Here is what I wrote:”Could you please explain how you calculated welterweight ratings with Floyd Mayweather being ahead of Manny Pacquiao? Is it strictly by win and loss record or what is your formula?”

Surprisingly I have received a response rather quickly:

Hi Igor, there is a full explanation here ...

Reading the same explanation once again I realized that I was right back where I started. I urge you to read it and give me your feed back or just let me know what you think.

What should determine rankings in the boxing world should be the record. The undefeated fighter is the best for he holds the best record. Can see someone with defeats on his record being ranked higher, doesn't make any sense. JMO
