there is a nasty piece of crap floating around in the wild right now called conduit. I am not sure what you would call it, not spyware or malware or a virus per se but the thing will make a mess out of your system by downloading toolbars, hijacking browser and from reports I have been seeing it even likes sending out email once it gets on a system.
To date I know of no scanner that will block it or eliminate it as by nature it is not regarded as being as such because it apparently gets permission to live on a system as it appears to be some type of browser addon and installs with a toolbar or some other type of helper app.
Here is the only way I have found so far to get rid of it.
1 - if it shows in add or remove programs then do that first, otherwise start at step 2
2 - close all browser windows
3 - type regedit in run box
4 - click edit / find
5 - make sure keys, values, and, data are all checked
6 - type "conduit" without quotations in find what text box
7 - right click on entries found and select delete
8 - press F3 to continue
9 - continue until you see End of Registry notification
To be on the safe side I would run the above procedure a second time to confirm they are indeed all gone. At this point it should be gone and then you can clean up the browser mess by resetting homepage and search engines of your choice.
