My friend has this installation currently:
1 DPP44 switch with three sats 61.5-110-119
4 Vip 722 connected
Has power inserter on satellite out 1

He wants to add a SV8000HD. Can he trunk a DP34 switch to the DPP44 and if so then can he install the SV8000HD to Receiver Satellite in no. 1 on the DP34 switch?? The reason he wants to do it this way is because he already has a DP34 switch.

I have been reading around and just want to pass this buy some of the experts.

I guess if that does not work he can trunk another DPP44 switch??

yes it should work just fine. i have trunked a dpp44 from the dp34 abd had no problems. other way around should be ok also.

Thanks mechanicman for your help. Good to know it will work both ways. I read somewhere that the only limitation to using the DP34 switch is that if you want to later put a Vip receiver on the DP34 switch you have to use 2 inputs because the seperator won't work with the Dp34.

If he decides to go with two DPP44 switches cascaded I have read that you cannot put any FTA receiver on output 1 of the second DPP44 switch. My question would be can he just connect the power inserter to input no. 1 without a receiver and then connect the SV5000HD to input 2????

It would be best to use a second DPP44 switch, (keeps from confusing the Dish receivers) and all you need to do is move one of the Dish receivers over to the new switches #1 port then you can use the power inserter at that receiver without running a new separate coax for the power inserter.

The SV receiver can then go on port #4 on the first switch, or #2. #3 or #4 of the second one

Try to keep the pass through coax jumpers to the new switch under 1 foot if you can, (and use good coax) and be sure to ground both switches.

After this is done you will have to do a switch check on the Dish receivers so they know the second switch is there.

i am using a dpp44 switch right now with only fta boxes hooked up. i have a sv8000 on receiver 1 input with power inserter i am using dpp44 for 4 satellites. if you cascade a second dpp44 you will still need a power inserter for no 1 receiver.. diknet or an fta receiver.

Yes you do need the power inserter to run the DP44 switch, and I would advise not to run the FTA receivers through the DPP power inserter as it doesn't pass the FTA receivers DC voltage for the LNB through it, it may in the long run damage (might take some time, or not at all) the FTA receivers power supply for the LNB, as it is not a true DC load for the receiver.

Mechanicman:

As a test try shutting off the LNB power from the FTA receiver, as the DPP44 switch supplies the DC power to the LNB's, this will (if it works, and it should) protect the FTA recivers power supply.

Thanks Terryl for your help. I will be advising him to use a second DPP44 switch. I'm sorry I did not understand what you meant by this "Try to keep the pass through coax jumpers to the new switch under 1 foot if you can." Thanks again,

There are 4 pass through ports on the first DPP44 switch, they send the signals from the LNB's to the second and third switch (you can use 3 DPP44 switches on 4 LNB's) keep these coax jumpers as short as possible. (but not too short)

Terryl is speaking of the 4 cables between the 2 DPP44 switches:

Thanks to all for the help and great info. Now I know exactly what he needs to do.

awesome drawings WillDekkard. A picture is worth a thousand words. Thanks.

Greatly appreciated!

****!! you are smart... i did turn off lnb power and still have TV!! i will keep all sats lnb power off so as to save my receiver. actually just received a new power supply but that was due to another receiver falling into my open sv8000. and shorted out with lots of sparks...(dont ask)....
