This has been going on for a long time, it's pretty well known that you never, ever go to a quick lube shop. These places, and the big chains (pepboys, Canadian Tire) are notorious for performing shoddy work and lying to customers to sell work that isn't needed. They don't pay well enough to attract good techs, and the good ones they do get end up leaving and moving on to a real shop. The combination of low pay/low skilled techs and a high turnover makes for a bunch of techs that just don't care, about the job or about your car. I wouldn't trust these guys to put air in my tires.

Really, it should be taught in driver's ed to never take your car to a quick lube for anything, unless you want the car to leave in worse condition than it went in.

Whenever any of my cars go into the shop , I'm under the lift keeping an eye on the wrench.. If i'm not allowed to watch they dont do the repairs.. Not negociable.. I deal with a couple of friends for the maintenance on my VW's and I still have the habit of being there when they work, I always see a few extra things that need to be done that they wouldnt normaly take the liberty of doing.. Maybe thats why my cars last more than 15 years and 500'000 Km on a four banger..

Yep, you need to find a good mechanic that you trust... They're out there, usually small independent shops are a good choice, get referrals from family/friends. There are also lots of small shops that specialize in a particular make of car, those are good too.
