whats best recommended for an attic setup?
There are actually a lot of variables in answering that question.
My best advice it to go to TVFool & enter your information, This will help save you from guess work

If all of the channels in your area are on UHF, a Channel Master 4228HD should work fairly well....

You can try Channel Master 4221HD in local area - for 100milles and + 4228hd is better. Best with a tv hd

Biggest, baddest one that will fit the attic. It will outlast you (and possibly your great-grand-children) since it's dry and out of the weather. :D

Also the roofing material will cut the signal to the antenna by half or more,(depending on what it's made of) so an inline pre-amp may also be needed.
HD Stacker. Made in USA. Made in Mi. Google it.

Not a bad antenna for outdoors, but try and get that thing in an attic.

Will an inline pre-amp increase signal?

To a certain extent, but if the signal is too weak it won't be able to do much... A preamp is used to compensate for longer cable runs and splitting the signal to multiple TV's, so if you're in a weak signal area the preamp will compensate for the cable losses.

I have a DB8 on a 15' pole pulling signal from 40 miles away. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it for attic use for someone in the city. It is one of the modern flat antennas too so I would tack it on the wall nearest the towers and I think it would be fine. It worked great from in the house before I mounted it outside.

I have tried a couple of antennas and finally settled on a Channelmaster 2016. It has the pole mount at the end which worked for me. I used a satellite dish mount which is easy to mount in the attic or outside. This antenna pulled in signals from 20 - 30 miles away with no problem. Way better than the round omni directional thet they sell, and no amplifier.
Hope this helps.
