By Dan Ambrose: WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto has had things pretty easy since his last beating. His promoter Bob Arum has carefully guided Cotto since he was destroyed by Antonio Margarito and Manny Pacquiao and has kept him away from dangerous threats of any kind. Arum has even helped Cotto pick up a paper title against one of his own fighters from his Top Rank stable, the light hitting Yuri Foreman.
But even in that one, Cotto looked terrible until Foreman injured his defective leg and the fight was halted soon after in the 9th. But Arum has done a great job of keeping Cotto winning perhaps a lot longer than he would have otherwise. Cotto isn’t the same fighter he once was three years ago. That much is evident. Arum is putting him in against another one of his Top Rank oldsters, 33-year-old Antonio Margarito, who has a great deal of mileage on his body. The thought here is that Margarito may be degraded enough for Cotto to win this time.
Goodness knows, Cotto took a furious beating the last time he fought Margarito back in 2008, and was left a bloody barley recognizable mess. There wasn’t any rush to put Cotto back in with Margarito after that fight, but after two losses in his last three fights for Margarito, he’s now worthy of a rematch with Cotto. It’s pretty obvious that Cotto is the protected fighter here, the guy that’s supposed to win. But I’m not so sure if he can.
The body is willing but his skin and his inability to take hard shots without falling to pieces could be his downfall in this fight. Margarito already knows how to whip Cotto just by staying alive and landing shots. Cotto does all the rest by coming apart. All Margarito has to do is make sure he can stay in there long enough to put hands on Cotto and we’ll likely see Cotto bleeding like a stuck pig before too long.

I expect a better fight from cotto this time around. He knows what to expect this time.We will see if the plaster played a role in it or not.If he loses he can retire but if he wins it will get him a payday with mayweather or a rematch with pacquiao. I hope he does well. Always been a cotto fan. Wepa!!

We will see if those gloves were really loaded...I see Cotto motivated and with revenge on his mind.. I was shocked the first go around that Margarito beat him down with just body punches.............

it will be interesting to see if margarito fights a little more defensivly to protect his eye--if he does cotto is going to tear him up--he is usually a pressure fighter

You have to remember Margarito is a shadow of his former self... he might have rocks in his head, but these rocks have cracks in them.
Plus he has very bad eyes...
He has taken some enormous beatings since the Cotto fight.
Cotto has changed his boxing style... if he sticks to it, he will win.
If he gets macho and goes toe to toe, he will lose. He does not have one punch knockout power.
Plus as the article says, Cotto busts up easily.
Box and move, pick your spots and Cotto wins. Don't get caught against the ropes like last time.
I think it all comes down to how much Margarito has diminished. I think its quite a bit.
I like Cotto by decision.

Oh yeas, he used plastic of paris, the cut in Cottos mouth required 47 stitches to close. You saw his face after the fight, like if someone hit him with a baseball bat. This happened late in the fight cause the combination of Cotto getting tired and the plaster getting hard made it perfect for Antonio.

I have watched the first fight a few times and still undecided about plaster in his hands but kinda leaning toward he did especially how the impact his shots had after the 6th round. His punches to the body really froze Cotto leaving his chin exposed and Margarito unloaded. I just hope mentally Cotto is not shot cause this is gonna be a great slugfest and test of wills.

That was exactly my observation..he devastated him to the body until he just couldnt defend himself anymore.........But As I stated somewhere.. I will give my paisano all the credit in the world if he can do that again......Believe me they will be all eyes on the wrappings...lol.......

The best evidence of the wrong doing by Antonio was his torn hand wrapping after the bout and the result of his next fight after being caught with the plaster of paris. Losing by KO to Mosley really put experts to think that he was doing wrong from way back. I personally think that he's been lucky to get to fight the elite after cheating and take home good money. Cotto will develop a different way to approach Antonio in this one, showing his quality and dedication. Actually he's the last of the active Puerto Rican Champs.

Cement or no... lets hope the first beating didn't leave psychological scars on Cotto..
Cotto got beat up pretty good in the first fight.... he has to be thinking of that.
I do like Cotto by decision... but he is going to have to fight smart. Margarito is a big powerful messican!
Shane had the perfect style to beat Margarito... hit hard and move... dont get caught on the ropes.
Cotto going to have to do the same thing.
Cotto is a 2-1 favorite in Vegas... close.
This one is hard for me to call. They both have to be battling some major demons. Cotto took a couple of good beatings. One from Margarito and the other from the Pacman. Being beat down like he was from Margarito once, has to put a lot of doubt in the back of your mine. To top it off, he took another one from Manny. He has only fought 2 times since he fought many and both of them were kinda safe opponents. Margarito on the other hand, has been beat down a couple of times himself. The fight with Manny, he pretty much got beat down every round for 12 rounds. He took a bad beating that fight. It would probably would have been much better for him if he would have got knocked out early in that fight instead of taking the beating he did. Even thought Margarito beat Cotto, he hasn't fought since he took that beating from Manny. At least Cotto has had a couple of fights since he fought Manny. What I think this fight is going to come down to is who is going to be able to control their demons the best.

Cotto is a very disciplined fighter.. But his only flaw is that he doesnt adapt in midfight.. Again he fights with a lot of discipline but needs to have the ability to change tactics and I have not seen that from him.. I still go with him...Unless Margarito comes in weighing 180LBS into the fight.

it's going to be a great fight, i personally would really like to see cotto win, because i love the way he gives it all in his fights.
but gents, we've all seen rematches where one fellow has put a beating on the other and sadly the rematch usually turns out the same and sometimes worse. my head believes cotto will lose the fight, but my heart will be pulling for cotto to return the favor back to margarito.
can't wait to see the results!

I just watched a bit of Max Kellermans interview with Cotto and Margarito after the Pacman Marquez fight. If you watched I clearly see the hand wraps being split which don't happen. So yes Margarito cheated but what caught my attention is how Cotto responded about Margarito style of not quitting against Pacman with his eye busted. I am a huge fan of Cotto but to me it was almost like he was saying if he starts taking a beating from Margarito he is gonna laydown and even Max Kellerman seemed to feel that way. I hope Cotto is really prepared and fights like the great champ he was, he deserves a fair fight against Margarito .

that interview was really good, i thought they were going to go at it in the meeting.
cotto is really pissed about the plaster and may be super motivated in this fight, and who can blame him for being pissed.
margarito is totally defensive about the plaster and may feel like he has something to prove.
both these fighters have been beat down badly. cotto's eye and mouth bleed every fight now, thanks to margarito busting him up. remains to be seen what pacquiao's damage remains in margarito, but clearly he's going to be thinking about fighting to protect himself a little more....which is what usually happens to all old fighters when they want to minimize the damage...they become defensive.
anyhow, there's no love here and it's going to be a brutal fight with two guys who will fight with all they have.
did anyone else want to see one of them punch kellerman in the head?

He hit Manny harder than Marquez did last night.
Should be a good fight.. looking forward to it.

Margarito is a big man. He's also an animal in the ring, well trained and disciplined. If he smells fear or sees blood he's giving everything he can to end it. Cotto should be worried. Margarito should be worried too, Cotto is obsessed about evening the score. It's possible after this fight one of the two will be destroyed and never be the same in the ring.
He did hit Manny harder than Marquez, but Manny looked more hurt from Marquez than Margarito. Puzzling, unless Marquez really is a harder puncher.

N.Y. may not license Antonio Margarito
By Dan Rafael
ESPN.com
The rematch between junior middleweight titlist Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito is scheduled for Dec. 3 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
The fight, a major HBO PPV event, was announced with fanfare -- with New York State Athletic Commission chairwoman Melvina Lathan in attendance. A three-city media tour followed and the fight is nearly sold out. However, the fight could be forced to move to another venue if the New York commission denies Margarito a license on medical grounds, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told ESPN.com Wednesday night.
The New York commission, which denied Margarito's original application for a license after he applied for one on Oct. 31 because of the serious eye injury he suffered last year, held a three-hour-plus closed hearing on Wednesday in Manhattan at the request of Top Rank and Margarito after the initial license denial. The health of Margarito's right eye was the central topic of conversation.
During the hearing, which Arum attended, the commission heard testimony from the commission eye specialist, a doctor from its medical advisory board and two doctors who support Margarito's application, including his eye surgeon.
"Worst-case scenario is that they deny the license, and if they do, we have five other venues as backups," said Arum, who declined to name the other venues. "But we are still going Dec. 3. We're doing the fight. We have a license (for Margarito) from a few states. You play the hand that you're dealt. I'm not going to get myself worried about it. Hopefully, the commission does the right thing and grants the license."
In addition to a badly-broken orbital bone in his face, Margarito suffered a serious eye injury during a one-sided decision loss to Manny Pacquiao last Nov. 13 and has not fought since.
As a result of the beating Margarito took, he developed a large cataract in his right eye. Margarito and his team at first considered the injury to be career ending. However, he eventually had cataract surgery and an artificial lens was placed in his eye by Dr. Alan Crandall in Salt Lake City this past spring.
The New York commission is considering whether to license Margarito despite the eye problems. Normally, the sort of injury and surgery that Margarito had disqualifies a fighter from being licensed in New York.
The three-person commission, Lathan, Edwin Torres and Thomas Santino, are scheduled to vote on Margarito's license at a public hearing on Friday.
According to the commission, the decision to license Margarito "will be based on evidence and testimony presented" during Wednesday's hearing.
Margarito has been training in Mexico, but the eye has been a concern. He missed a day of training in late October to make a trip to Utah to see his doctor and have his eye examined, according to a source with knowledge of the trip.
Margarito's licensing issues in New York have nothing to do with the hand-wrapping scandal that saw him have his license revoked in California for trying to enter the ring with loaded hand wraps for a January 2009 fight with Shane Mosley.
Margarito sat out for 16 months and although California denied Margarito's application to be re-licensed and Nevada refused to rule on an application, he was eventually licensed in Texas and fought Pacquiao at Cowboys Stadium a year ago. According to sources, New York had assured Top Rank that the hand wrap scandal would not be an issue in licensing Margarito. A medical issue, however, is a different story.
In July, Sergio Diaz, Margarito's co-manager, told ESPN.com that Crandall told Margarito that the eye problem "was very fixable and not a career-ending injury. Antonio had pretty much accepted the fact that he would have surgery and have to retire. But they did this different kind of surgery that day, a half-hour surgery. They removed the cataract and put in a new lens. His vision is a whole lot better and will continue to get better."
Diaz further said Margarito (38-7, 27 KOs) was due to have a second laser surgery a couple of weeks later but that "Antonio is going to be fine. He has been released to continue his career."
Arum said that Crandall testified via video conference during Wednesday's hearing and that the other doctors were present, but that the commission members never asked any questions -- just listened to the testimony.
"It was a different kind of hearing. Nobody asked any questions," Arum said. "The commission wanted to play it close to the vest so they never asked a question. But whatever it is, it is. We'll see Friday."
Before saying he would move the card to another state if Margarito was not licensed, Arum considered bringing in Vanes Martirosyan as a replacement for Margarito. Martirosyan, a 2004 U.S. Olympian and undefeated contender promoted by Top Rank, was told he might get the call and has been preparing for a possible fight.
But Arum said that was no longer under consideration.
"That option is off the table," Arum said.
Margarito and Cotto (36-2, 29 KOs) first met in 2008 in what turned out to be a tremendous action-filled fight. Mexico's Margarito came on strong in the later rounds and stopped Puerto Rico's Cotto in the 11th round of a bloody battle, taking his welterweight belt at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Because Margarito was caught trying to fight Mosley with loaded hand wraps in his next fight, and had administered significant facial damage to Cotto in the later rounds, many suspected he had gotten away with wearing illegal hand wraps, making the Dec. 3 fight a much-anticipated grudge rematch.

If NY state doesn't approve this event, it should take place in the San Juan Coliseum. Twice Arum had Cotto defend his tittles in the Main land, losing them to Margarito and Pacquiao. It's time for Puerto Rico to see his only champ fight for his belt in his own territory. Arum should not only do that but also sing the papers for the 5th of may against PBF. The world will celebrate if this is done.

Yep, Manila, I think they deserve to see the congressman defend his tittle there. Guess Roach and Arum dictate what he does, that's bad for he needs to show leadership on all aspects of his life. He's so good and humble that others tell him what to do. Good post ,rudee.
