DN reported this morning that it lost 111,000 net subscribers in the third quarter, marking the second straight quarter that it lost more than 100,000 subscribers.
The satcaster lost approximately 135,000 net subscribers in the second quarter, The third quarter loss leaves DN with approximately 13,945 million subscribers. (D*sh gained 58,000 net subscribers in the first quarter of 2011.)
In contrast, rival DTV reported last week that it added 327,000 net subscribers thanks largely to a NFL Sunday Ticket promotion.
The satcaster tried to soften the news by proclaiming that revenue increased 12.3 percent ($3.60 billion) in the third quarter, compared to the 2010 third quarter.
"D*SH delivered another quarter of strong growth in net income compared to the same period last year," said Joe Clayton, president and CEO of DN. "Our net subscriber loss improved over the second quarter of this year but continued to be affected by increased competitive pressures, including aggressive competitive promotional offers, discounting and a weak housing market."
In a press release today, D*sh expressed hope that newly acquired Blockbuster would help generate new subs for the satellite service.
"Going forward, we plan to build on the momentum of our introduction of the Blockbuster-branded programming service which allows D*SH customers to stream movies and TV shows as well as receive DVDs by mail," Clayton stated.
