From what I understand Coz they work real well in shallow water 10-40 feet,my neighbor has one and he like I do deep water fishing 100-120 and he says it's alright but it's seems better in the shallows. He has the Lowrance HD10 as I do but with the down and side scan.
I was just talking to a walleye fisherman a few days ago and he swears by it...I think for about $500 I could add it to mine,it may happen this coming summer.
Good luck

Ps you might want to check out Hummingbird also as I find lowrances support isn't the best! maybe someone with a hummingbird can chime in .....

the one i'm look at is the humming bird, about $750. with transducer. hurd too many bad things about lowrance customer support. remember, once i get it, hard to return, as i'm on an island. have to order it, and have someone bring it down here. here's our season here.

I have the HB 1197 at the console and the 797 at the bow. The SI and DI has shown and taught me so much more that I never understood with traditional sonar. I am now better to understand what I am seeing with either. There is still a learning curve to using the SI and DI as it is a little more to it than just plug and play. You need to fine tune them. I have no regrets on the purchases and hope to upgrade to a larger screen at the bow sometime.

would be great if they had a plug-in for a small flatscreen. 5 inch screens are kind of small. my color underwater camera plugs into my flat screen. great shots of the bottom at 65 feet.

Sheesh We are behind the times..... Where I come from. (reference avatar). We use a fishing rod at the front and a fishing rod at the back with two people attached...;)
The only screams (i mean screens) we hear(see) is when we get a fish.. :)
Sorry folks i could not resist. :)

My 1197 has a 10" screen and a video out connection to hook up any size monitor. For me the 10" screen is plenty large enough even for my old tired eyes.
