I have a Nanosat with a 37" Vizio LCD, plus a Phillips Home theater. I had a digital coaxial cable, so I thought I would try it and connect from Nanosat SPDIF to Phillips home theater. great sound. however, if i don't have the home theatre on I cannot receive sound. My vizio only as a optical cable next to coaxial (cable) connection, and on the other side is my component connections for picture for Nanosat, but I had RCA's for sound with them before from the Nanosat. If I have both RCA's and digital cable, it works but I usually get a echo, it is hard to balance the sound. Not sure what to do? It's just sometimes I may not want to turn on the home theatre for what ever reason.

i forgot to add on vizio, I have one optical output, next to coaxial (cable) output. the Nanosat have SPDIF and a Optical output. The phillips home theatre has one SPDIF and one Optical output. SO right now from Nanosat goes SPDIF (digital cable) to Phillips home theatre and from home theatre goes another optical cable to Vizio.

What you need is an optical switch. One like this:

There are automatic switchers however they get a little pricey and would not work as you would always have the TV on which it would detect.

So out from the nanosat and into the single in/out port of the toslink switch and out port#1 to the TV, port#2 to the home theatre, & port#3 for future use.

So why can't I do this without this item? I don't have enough toslink ports?

Personally I use my amp for sound all the time. If you want to only have the tv for sound sometimes keep it connected as you have it and go into the audio settings of television.
You should see something like a TV speakers option/ audio system option.
If you turn it to audio system it will disable the tv speakers and get rid of the echo.

If you don't have this option or if you can't find it. Just mute the tv or turn the volume all the way down and control the volume with the amp.

The echo is caused by a slight delay of the data being transfered to two different audio sources.

great thanks. If I have rca's and optical plugged in, i do require volume up a few notches on nanosat receiver in order to get sound from home theatre. but i will mess around, not a huge issue. are we technically getting digital sound from Nanosat or is it analog?

If your using the optic or the component input it will be digital. The RCA is anologe
On the back of your amp you will have a mode title above your optical input. It could be DVD or it could be DVR or something else.
You will have to set that as your audio mode to get sound from the amp.

You said you wanted the option to use the optical for sound to either the TV or the home theatre. The switch would isolate the feed from the nanosat to either the TV or the home theatre thereby allowing you to switch the optical feed from the nanosat to the TV, bypassing the home theatre.
