Kim Jong Il could have died as long as several days ago. He had been in ill health for some time. His youngest son, Kim Jong Un, 22, has taken his place. Compared to his father, who was trained for 20 years to take over ruling North Korea, Kim Jong Un has been groomed for only two years. North Korea has the fourth largest army and is a nuclear power.

The question now is will Kim Jong Un become the Un Leader with internal power struggles? His uncle in law, Jang Song Taek, had been acting as regent during Kim Jong Il's illness. Although unpopular with the military, he is unlikely to easily step aside. North Korean instability is not a good thing for the world or region. China has been lobbying to maintain a troop presence in North Korea which was being resisted. A possible reunification of South and North Korea could be economically devastating at an estimated cost of $1 trillion. Not a trifiling expense in a shaky world economy. Also possible are strikes against South Korea to bolster Kim Jong Un's stature with the power elite.

I doubt seriously his people loved him. It was fear not love just as it is with any dictatorship. Definitely not a good thing that his young 4 star general son is taking over. I would not want to be stationed on the DMZ right now even in "stable" times its a dangerous place to be for American, South Korean and UN troops.
