For the 11th year in a row, thousands of pant-less individuals boarded subway trains in major cities around the world as part of Improv Everywhere's No Pants Subway Ride.
On Sunday afternoon, subway riders in 50 major cities around the world, like London, Mexico City, Tel Aviv, NYC, Vancouver, and Toronto, were in for quite a surprise. Thousands of individuals participating in the annual No Pants Subway Ride did just that. They rode the subway without any pants on.
But do not fret. These were not your typical nudists. In fact they were required to wear underwear as well as shirts, coats, scarves, sweaters, gloves, hats, shoes, and boots. They carried purses and bags, read books, listened to music, and acted simply as if nothing out of the ordinary was occurring.
The event started 11 years ago in NYC when two members of Improv Everywhere, a group wanting to bring "scenes of chaos and joy" to everyday life, walked onto a subway car in their underwear and pretended not to know each other. Since then, the event has grown to include people from all walks of life.
Participants are only required to keep a straight face and ignore the fact that they are not wearing pants.
Perhaps many of you are wondering what the point of all this is. Well, the point is that there really is no point.
No, there is no political agenda or greater message behind the event. If you can believe it, it's just for the sheer pleasure of making onlookers giggle.
I personally think it's hilarious. The subway is such a perfect platform for this kind of awkward social situation because riders have no choice but to linger in the discomfort of a pant-less individual refusing to acknowledge the fact that she or he is pant-less. Sure, there are some people who will be offended, but for the most part, the reactions are positive.
For the fifth year in a row in Toronto, barelegged individuals were met with cheers, gasps, and laughter, and for the third year in a row, Vancouver participants were met with giggles, and smiles.
Founders of No Pants Subway ride simply wanted to know what would happen if someone came onto the subway in underwear and then another person at the next stop got on in underwear as well. They hoped to bring a little bit of hilarity to what would otherwise be a normal day.
I certainly think it's all rather cheeky, and from the many videos and pictures surfacing, others do as well...
