Do a web search for Amazon free ebooks. They always have promotional ebooks you can take for free. Sometimes they are old non-copyright but some are just totally unknown authors or the first in a series to get you hooked lol. Anyway they are free and don't worry about kindle. I have a Sony eReader (ePub format) and I dl from there all the time.

And I second the overdrive from the library. You can reserve what you want then check it out just like normal. Where I live, the overdrive system is state wide at a different site than the regular county-based libraries so look around for it. As long as you have a library card, it's free and the selection is really growing as eBooks get more popular.

ehorrorbargains.com is a great site for good discounted horror reads, and there are always free ones too. Mostly for Kindle (Amazon), so people like me with a Kobo - can still get some good deals, or you'll have to dl the kindle app for PC and then copy the files to USB and then use a program like calibre to convert.
