It turns out Dish was a bit more confident in Blockbuster's rental stores than it should have been.

"We are committed to keeping the profitable stores open that are generating positive cash flow, but there are ones that aren't going to make it," Dish CEO Joe Clayton said in an interview published yesterday with Reuters. "We will close unprofitable stores. We will close additional stores."

After Dish bought Blockbuster last year for $320 million, the company said that it planned to keep 1,500 Blockbuster rental stores open, and maintain 15,000 employees. Clayton told Reuters that more stores than anticipated have slipped into the red, and therefore it won't actually have 1,500 stores operating. Clayton stopped short of saying how many stores Dish will close, Reuters said. He also wouldn't say when the closures will start.

Although some stores will be shuttered for good, Clayton told Reuters that some locations will be converted to Dish customer-service operations. According to Clayton, subscribers will be able to go into the Dish stores and swap out boxes, "so you don't have to stay at home and wait for an installation."

Since completing its Blockbuster acquisition in April, Dish has been focused on getting value from the once-dominant rental chain. Back in September, Dish announced Blockbuster Movie Pass, a bundle of services that includes streaming video; DVDs; Blu-Rays and games by mail; and access to premium movie channels. The service is available to existing customers for $10 a month and new subscribers who choose the satellite provider's America's Top 200 package for $39.99 a month.

Dish did not immediately respond to CNET's request for comment on the Blockbuster closures.

They better fire up home delivery or the entire chain is going to go the way of the dinosaur. What moron convinced dish to buy blockbuster? I'd love to have the golden parachute that moron had.

I know I haven't been in a Blockbuster store in....forever. They sort of priced themselves out of the market, and didn't really have a higher quality of service to back up that pricing. We had two or three in this area, one was good from what I remember but the other two were awful, half the time you would go in there and it would be cleaned right out, they never had enough inventory so you'd go in looking for a movie only to find them out of it.

I have a few blockbuster Kiosk around me here in the south east US. (I think they are in walmart and are in the Publix grocery stores.
Like the "REDBOX" vending system, so they just might give Chicago based "Coin Star" a run for it's money (Or Coins)LOL
(coinstar is the parent company of Red box)

When they went belly up around here, the used dvd sets were like $20 or $30 a piece used.
You could buy them new in walmart for that.
I think of all the video clubs I joined when video tapes first came out.
Lifetime membership,yeah right.

Hahaha... everyone knows that DISH has no customer service.

And if you need any sort of installation you would still need to stay home and wait for it... what they didn't say was that half the country - the West half - is about to go to MPEG4 and everybody will need to go and get their ONE free new receiver so DISH will keep some stores open to swap out receivers and then close those remaining stores when they are finished.

People will still use the automated rental terminals but the days of paying employees to man storefronts is over.

They bought the BLOCKBUSTER trademark - that's the most valuable part of the deal - they can license that to everyone that uses it.

Those terminals are operated by IBM and chances are Red Box will take them over shortly.
