By William Mackay: With former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz’s February 11th HBO fight with Andre Berto falling through due to Berto’s ruptured left biceps muscle, Ortiz is looking someone else to fight in the near future and he seems to have set his sights on former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan, WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez or former two-time welterweight champion Antonio Margarito.

Ortiz said this on his twitter page today: “Since my fight didn’t work out w/ Berto, I want @AmirKingKhan @caneloalvarez and @antoniomargarito let’s do this!”

The chances of Ortiz getting Alvarez are probably slim right now because Ortiz is currently being matched against mostly weaker guys and Ortiz can actually fight and is around the same size as Alvarez, but a lot faster, a little older and more experienced against quality opposition.

Alvarez is also a southpaw and that would make him even less likely to get a fight against the young 21-year-old Alvarez. As for a fight against 34-year-old Margarito, it’s not going to happen because Margarito fights for Top Rank Promotions and the two promotional companies rarely let their fighters fight guys from the rival promotional company.

In addition, Margarito is already being mentioned as the leading candidate for WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr’s next fight in April or May. Chavez Jr. is also a Top Rank fighter, Margarito will get that fight likely for that reason alone and also because he will bring in a lot of Mexican fans for this fight.

Ortiz’s only real chance is if Khan agrees to fight him and I’m not so certain he will. Khan will likely ease his way into the welterweight division by taking on an older fighter that is completely shot or someone with zero power. Chavez Jr. has fought only two guys in his entire pro career that had any power and both of them – Breidis Prescott and Marcos Maidana – gave him a lot of problems.

Everybody wants Khan now that's he's been exposed. Chavez vs Margarito just became a more interesting fight. Chavez could have the edge over Margarito at the end of his career...too much damage at this point.

I always said Khan's days were counted, Victor should KO him in 8 rounds. That is if he wants to fight, I think that he will preferred a weaker opponent. No money involved in this match.(PBF) Yes Margarito is damaged goods but he'll beat Chavez.
