Pacquiao could retire after Bradley fight
February 12th, 2012

By Chris Williams: Bob Arum may be in looking for a new gravy train fighter a lot sooner than a lot of people originally thought, as his #1 big money fighter WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao is reportedly considering retirement to devote his time on his reading his bible and working in politics after his scheduled June 9th fight against Timothy Bradley.

According to abs-cbnnews.com, Pacquiao has turned over a new leaf in life, and given up vices such as “womanizing, gambling and drinking…[Pacquiao has] accepted the church’s offer to become as bible ambassador.”

The article states that Pacquiao feels that it may not look right him still fighting in the ring after having accepted the bible ambassador job.

According to the AFP, the Catholic church in the Philippines approached Pacquiao recently to see if they could get him to help promote the bible with fellow Catholics. At the time Pacquiao didn’t commit to the idea but it look as if he’s decided to help with this job.

This obviously could get in the way of Pacquiao ever fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. due to Pacquiao now considering retirement to devote his time to his politic job and the job of being a bible ambassador.

What this means for Bob Arum is that he’s either going to have to get hard at work trying to convince Pacquiao to not retire or he’s going to have to look for the next Pacquiao. Having seen the recent performance of Nonito Donaire, who many fans see as the next Pacquiao, I don’t see there being anyone that can take Pacquiao’s place. Donaire isn’t the guy, and Arum’s other money fighter WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is considered a paper champion in the eyes of a lot of boxing fans. Chavez Jr. can’t bring in the Manny money, not when he’s being kept away from guys like Sergio Martinez.

If Pacquiao does decide to retire after the Bradley fight then I think the timing is perfect. Pacquiao has looked like he’s been on the decline for the past few fights, and if were to continue to fight beyond Bradley, it would very likely lead to him getting beaten if Arum decides to match him with someone good like Mayweather or Juan Manuel Marquez. Even if Arum continues to match Pacquiao mostly with his Top Rank stable fighters, there will come a time soon where Pacquiao is losing to even those guys. His legs aren’t what they once were and he looks tired all the time in the ring.

I think it might be time for Pacquiao to hang up the old gloves and let Donaire take his place. This will be fun to see how long Arum waits before matching Donaire against someone good. We may see Guillermo Rigondeaux be the Mayweather to Donaire, with Arum reluctant to test his star Donaire with Rigondeaux. I think we’re already seeing it now.

If Pacquiao does retire after the Bradley fight in order devote his time to being a bible ambassador, I just hope he’s not sorry for it later. A lot of people go into religion for a time and then snap out of it and question why they had followed it in the first place.

First Arum made money from his performance, now the church wants a piece of the action. His getting old will be accelerated by this move, soon will see him sitting in a rocking chair counting the beats of a rosary as my grandmother used to. Sad for the boxing world, rudee, what is your opinion on this?

Pacquiao Might Be Using Retirement Card To Pressure Mayweather To Stop Ducking

February 13th, 2012

By Scoop Malinowski

Manny Pacquiao might be growing weary of chasing the elusive and reluctant Floyd Mayweather. After compromising on numerous Mayweather demands and conditions over the last 28 months, and having still failed to get the elusive and reluctant American into the ring, Pacquiao says he may retire from the ring after his June 9 fight with Tim Bradley.

Pacquiao, age 33, has been a professional boxer since his teenage years and seems to be losing the ferocious killer instinct which was a part of his spectacular performances against Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Antonio Margarito and Miguel Cotto. Since those scintillating triumphs, Pacquiao has appeared less vicious and more merciful against Joshua Clottey, Shane Mosley and Juan Manuel Marquez.

Massive wealth, maturity and a shortage of inspiring opposition, can alter even the most violent killing machines over time – consider the furies of Mike Tyson, Roberto Duran and Ricardo Mayorga, who eventually became mere shells of their former selfs.

Manny Pacquiao has done everything he can to force Mayweather to box him but that fight seems now to be an impossibility. It has to be a disappointment for Pacquiao to fail to capture the number one target he wants most of all, and it has been showing in his most recent performances.

The result is, Pacquiao’s inner fire is now simmering, it’s not blazing like it was just a few years ago. With Mayweather running and making his excuses, and people like George Peterson (an associate of Floyd advisor Al Haymon) saying “the fight will never happen, some fights aren’t meant to be made,” Pacquiao is changing and losing his lust for prizefighting. There is nothing left to prove now that Mayweather wants to only box Golden Boy controlled fighters. In essence, Pacquiao is just going through the motions now with meaningless exhibitions to make money and entertain his huge fan base. The big Super Bowl event which should have come two years ago, is being blocked by Mayweather and his team or protectors.

More evidence of Pacquiao’s changing person is that he said last month he is now a Bible ambassador for a church in the Philippines, and that he has “renewed his faith” and will turn his back on vices like “womanizing, gambling, and drinking.”

Of course, you have to consider that it’s also possible that Pacquiao could be strategically playing the “retirement” card to apply pressure on Mayweather and Haymon to stop ducking and dodging and come to the table and make the darn 50-50 deal for November.

How Mayweather responds to Pacquiao’s threat of retirement will be interesting. If Mayweather truly wants to fight Manny this year, like he claims with words but not actions, he will be upset to learn Pacquiao may quit boxing. If Mayweather is relieved and happy to hear Pacquiao will retire, it will prove what many of us have been saying for two years – Floyd never wanted the Pacquiao fight, he only faked and pretended it for image reasons.

Now is the time to shut up and put up. With Manny contemplating quitting boxing this year, Mayweather and Haymon need to respond to Pacquiao and make a deal for November. Haymon needs to contact Bob Arum – for once in his life – right about now. Floyd needs to say, Okay if we both win our next fights vs. Cotto and Bradley, let’s do it in November for 50-50.

Mayweather and Cotto will be sitting right beside him. Look at the bright side though. We will probably be hearing something in the future like, "Juan Manuel Márquez just turned 47 today and he is still knocking people out!!!".

Ya know guys,,, we have been on this road before.. I think Aqua started saying Manny would retire after Marquez... which he didnt. Doubt very much Manny will retire.. when you
think about it... he is still very good.. not as good as he was mind you... but better than anyone else besides Roger.. (which we will probably never find out)
So if yer a very good boxer,,, ya make 20 million a fight and fight 2 times a year, plus don't get hit solid very often, it sure as hell doesnt make sense to quit.
Not until guys are hitting you hard. Then you say,, no mas.
AND,, we neglected to mention his appearance dough,, his commercials,, on tv and product endorsements. Manny has gotta be pulling in 50-60 million a year..
AND,,, living in the Philipines!!! so what if he tosses the church a little dough.. he should! I know he does tremendous charity work anyway..
And if the church ain't careful,,, he could dump them completely. You don't get to heaven by giving dough to the church... you do it by how you live yer life.
I respect Manny as a man and as a fighter.. but I must say I do believe he and Floyd are scared to death of each other... they have too much to lose by fighting
each other. The loser will lose a lotta face. Floyd with the "brothers" and the public... and Manny in the homeland.. so why do it? as i have said,, they both
have tons of money... If i woulda been Manny,,, i woulda called a tv press conference and said..."Floyd,,, i will take 40 million... lets get it on!"
Floyd was banking on him saying NO....
Arum is so friggin old, he dont have time to spend all the money he would make.. must have a 21 year old vieja hiding someplace.
Anyway,,, Floyd and Manny are no spring chickens anymore... keep feeding them the likes of Mosley and Bradley and the rest... they will hang around forever.
Like the Klitscho boys... they will be champs at 50!

There may be a lot of truth to these articles. Manny is not the same fighter and he let off everyone in the last few fights, except Marquez who seems to be Manny's Kryptonite. I'm sure Jinkee has a lot to do with this too. He's probably be given an ultimatum at home, and we all know what a woman can do to our heads...not that one, the one that thinks. lol

I hope this fight gets made but there is a lot of expertise in these posts. Neither Manny or Floyd want to be remembered as a loser. If the fight doesn't get made, Manny will still be the best fighter I've seen in the ring, not perfect, but at his best it was damn good.

Manny WAS good... but Sugar Ray Robinson was the best I ever saw... fought many many better fighters than Manny or
Floyd did... AND at different weights... no bitching about 3 or 4 pounds,,, and you got weighed in the same day as the fight!
This was a long time ago.

There were other times, with better players
than these over-rated punks, just to name a few

Leonard, Hearns, Hagler
Benitez, Duran, Espada, Cuevas

Jose "Mantequilla" Napoles, the Cuban resident of Mexico was one of the greatest ever.

You got that right Dss and Plastik.... these two bums are 35 years old.. shoulda fought each other 3 or 4 years ago... but they are both lacking cojones...
Fib is right... Mantequilla was one of the best... saw him here in LA.. loved Mexico..
But as far as the greatest.... keeping in mind i am old,,, Sugar Ray Robinson.... who can forget that famous left hook he took Gene Fullmer out with.
One shot k.o. and NOONE took Gene out with one punch...
Floyd and Manny should be made to watch Carmen Basilio fight Sugar Ray with ONE EYE completely closed for most of the fight.. and Sugar Ray
was much bigger than Carmen... Carmen asked his corner to slit his eye so he could see out of it,,, of course they did not.... it went 15 rounds!!!
Ray won of course... but it was close... and Carmen did not run... he only knew how to go forward.
Point being,,, these two maricones (floyd and manny) are scared ....less of each other... while the great champs of yesteryear did it for almost nothing... except...
PRIDE!!!!
No way in God's green earth would i pay $70 to see these two clowns fight... especially at their age!!! NO WAY!!!

I have been a boxing fan for many years.. Starting back in the late 60s up to now... I have seen many great fighters and can only comment on the ones I saw and not the ones before me... I can say this with most certainty.. Manny Paquiao is one of the most versatile fighters I have ever seen.. He throws punches from any angle where the opponent never would expect it.. I dont count the Marquez fights, as I have stated before every fighter has that one opponent that you just can figure...Marquez is that fighter against Manny.. The only difference is that Marquez has never beat Manny.. As others that did again as I mentioned before.. ( Chavez-Randall, Arguello Pryor..etc..etc..) So I really dont count Marquez and still believe Manny is as good as ever..Notice I did not bring up what his name as I am boycotting talk about them facing each other as it will never happen.... Salud to all my boxing friends.................:cor::drink1::cor::drink1: :cor:

He doesn't even need to win the fight to preserve his legacy—Pacquiao has already entrenched himself as one of the finest fighters of all time, and losing to an excellent fighter in Mayweather wouldn't change that—but not fighting Mayweather would always come up when discussing his legacy. He would be remembered as much for what he didn't do as as for what he did accomplish, and no athlete ever wants that. So don't retire before giving us the super fight we all want, Manny. Your legacy might be riding on it.

interesting rationale on discussing how good a fighter is....don't count his toughest most controversial fights !
