Answer to the first question.

As many as you can afford, I have installed one system at a hotel with 400 rooms, it took a multi switch with several sub switches but it still works to this day.

You can get a single LNB to 16 receiver switch from EMP, there are others that can go to 64 receivers.

Answer to the second question.

Maximum distance is determined by the coax you use, the cheap stuff can run about 100 feet, the good RG-6 quad with the pure copper center conductor can run up to 200 feet.

If you use the RG-11 in EMT conduit you could go 300 feet.

Adding switches and ground blocks will lower the distance, the more you add the more system loss, some of the better high end switches have compensation amps in them but they cost a few penny's.
