May 5 or June 9 is still months away. There are several fights worth forgetting about bowling or poker.

Before we get to Maidana and Alexander, there is ALEXANDER POVETKIN taking on a young prospect, MARCO HUCK. Here is the scoop:

TUTTGART, Germany — WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck of Germany is moving up to the heavyweight level against undefeated Alexander Povetkin.

He’ll step into the ring 20 pounds lighter (209) than the Russian, who will defend his WBA title on Saturday night.

German boxer Marco Huck, left, and Russian WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin pose at the weighing in Stuttgart, southern Germany, Friday Feb. 24, 2012. The title bout is scheduled for Saturday Feb. 25, 2012. (Streamed live on EPIX and Boxnation at 4:00 pm EST. RAMON-PR also tells me it is on Channel 380!!! Thanks, Ramon! ENJOY)

“In the end it won’t be my weight that’s decisive, but my punch,” Huck said. (Huck is impressive at Cruiserweight with a high 71.43% of KO but will that be enough to handle Povetkin?)

Povetkin will make his second defense of the title he claimed by defeating Ruslan Chagaev last August.

It had been Wladimir Klitschko’s title following the Ukrainian’s victory over David Haye the month before, but was declared vacant when the WBA elevated Klitschko to “super champion” status.

The Yugoslav-born Huck is 34-1 (25 KOs) heading into the bout at the Porsche Arena.

“Povetkin is good, but I can beat him,” Huck said. “We once did sparring together and he has bad memories of me. On Saturday, I will be the new champ. He is going down.”

Povetkin, whose record of 23 wins includes 16 knockouts, was unfazed by Huck’s show of confidence.

“At first I was surprised about Huck’s challenge because he has never fought at heavyweight before,” he said. “But I am happy to defend my title against anybody out there. I am in great shape and I will win.”

It will be the Russian’s first bout without respected American coach Teddy Atlas since 2009. But Povetkin said training in his home city of Chekhov with new coach Alexander Zimin was “very good.”

“There is a good chemistry between us and we get along very well,” Povetkin said.

Zimin believes his fighter is “20 to 30 percent stronger than in his last fight,” an eighth-round knockout of American challenger Cedric Boswell.

“But the best is yet to come. He has got great potential,” he added, looking ahead to a possible bout against one of the Klitschko brothers, who have a stranglehold on the heavyweight division.

WHO IS ADRIEN BONER?http://www.boxingscene.com/uploads/49917/AlexanderMaidanaFinalPC_Hoganphotos.jpg

Well, he is quite impressive - a Mayweather look-a-like - who demolished Jason Litzau last June, 2011. He's got speed; he's got the moves; he is very busy in the ring. He will take on Eloy Perez, undefeated, from Salinas, California (23-0, 7 KO). Perez is no bum. He is quite skillful. It will be a test for Boner, who is 3 years younger at 22.

ALEXANDER/MAIDANA

(By the way, both will be shown on HBO at 10 pm EST.)

Who do you like? Both have had some "bad outings" during the last two years. Alexander did poorly against Tim Bradley when he was expected before that to be an "outstanding prospect". Maidana was manhandled by Amir Khan. They are schedule to fight in St. Louis, Missouri at 147 lbs. (welterweight).

Here is a report by Darren Velaso:

On February 25th, two light welterweight contenders are set to clash in Saint Louis, Missouri in a 10-round welterweight showdown. While both fighters have shown prominence in the light welterweight division, Marcos Maidana and Devon Alexander will take another stab at the 147 lb landscape. During each of their careers they have fluctuated between 140 and 150 with more focus on the earlier so the welterweight limit could equate to some intriguing dynamics

The headlining label is “Thunder and Lightning”, which may be the most appropriate association for a matchup so far this year. Argentina’s Marcos Maidana (31-2, 28 KOs) will go toe-to-toe with the hometown star Devon Alexander (22-1, 13 KOs) in St. Louis. With an undercard filled with tremendous young talent, this matchup could bring the standard to a supernatural level.

The classic boxer-puncher clash will be in full effect and quite possibly showcased in its most extreme degree this Saturday at the Scottrade Center. Alexander, who is known for his quickness and accuracy, is most accustomed to hearing the final bell while Maidana has had the scorecards read to him only five times in his career. Expected tactics going into this bout could not be anymore diverse with a point-seeking speedster and a headhunting brawler.

Saturday’s bout presents two of the most dissimilar combatants in a fight that will catapult the victor into huge upcoming fights and could stain the loser’s resume for any future opportunities. This is, quite possibly, the best fight that either fighter could hope for because of their individual unfortunate history. Both contending hopefuls are coming off of recent defeats to some of the division’s big names in Timothy Bradley, Amir Khan, and Andriy Kotelnyk so Saturday will be a form of redemption and possible reemergence.

The anticipated battle between Marcos Maidana and Devon Alexander will not be about who is stronger or who is quicker but it will showcase whose department will narrate the fight. The welterweight bout will discover whether speed can zoom past power or if strength can raze fundamental accuracy and swiftness.

IF IT GETS A LITTLE BORING, well.....you can catch Frank Edgar take on Benson Henderson/ Rampage Jackson challenge Ryan Bader - UFC 144.

The only thing I can say is that Maidana better knock Alexander out. If Maidana clearly wins every round and it goes to the score cards, he is going to get screwed.

If Maidana wins, my hope is that a riot like that in Argentina two weeks ago does not happen.

Ouch!!...that would be another black eye and a Half for Argentinian Boxing!!...They have so many good prospects down there, and need the exposure.

Huck vs Povetkin was a very enjoyable fight, after last weeks boredom. It was refreshing to see a good Bout on the Heavyweight division where the fighters truly deserve their pay cheque. I'm still amazed to see how lively these events are in Europe, wish to see that in NA, very well organized and the support is right up there!

Yer Old Man a wise man Chido!!
Maidana is a one punch wonder with no boxing abilities... can't hurt the big boys with his shots.. needs to go back down in weight.. plus can't take a body shot.
Alexander looked great... but Maidana is made to order for him... slow, a plodder with no boxing ability. He got shut out!
Glad to see some good boxing back on tv.... still feel sorry for my little paisano... family all there.
But lets face it.. he is not very good.

Terrific day/night for boxing indeed. I do think however that Marco Huck took it to Povetkin. To me, he was the stronger guy. It could have gone the other way.

Broner is an excellent boxer. I like Eloy Perez: humble and cheerful. He was just in with a terrific boxer. The KO punch is questionable as it hit him in the back of his head. No excuse, though, because regardless, the outcome would not have been different. Eloy is young (25). He could come back from this defeat. Kellerman and Papa are right though. Broner owns the 130 lbs. division.

Maidana did not look right at all. He looked skiny and weak. I don't think he belongs to the welterweight division. On the other hand, Alexander seems quite comfortable at 147 lbs. He is not the same guy who lost to Bradley. He was composed and quick. Maidana had no defense for his quick combinations and counters. Alexander just wrote himself a great ticket to big time bouts. I could see him against Amir Khan, Andre Berto, Ortiz...or Bradley. This time I think he could turn it around with Bradley.

What a night of boxing, folks!

I don't think anyone ever accused Maidana of being a boxer. Boxers are boring. They tend to run around the ring, throw potshots, and clinch when their opponents get to close. Because boxers are boring, the way they make their money is by running their mouth outside the ring. They p1ss people off, so show up to their fight and hope some brawler pins them into a corner and totally knocks the crap out of them. Brawlers are exciting and they make the sport, because they bring the action. They are almost always coming forward, tend to take a lot of punches, show a lot of heart, and like to throw punches. Some of the biggest names in the sport were brawlers. Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, and George Foreman, just to name a few. Some of the bigger names in the sport today are brawlers. Marcos Maidona, Brandon Ríos, Timothy Bradley, Paul Williams, Canelo Alvarez, Julio César Chávez Jr., Antonio Margarito, James Kirkland, Alfredo Angulo, Juan Manuel Márquez, Miguel Cotto. and even Manny Pacquiao. If it wasn't for the brawlers, the sport of boxing would totally die out here in the states.

Yeah Yogi,,, but the brawlers you mentioned hit hard with two hands and could take body blows.... Maidana hits hard with his right hand only.. and is very slow
and VERY vulnerable to the body.. he does not compare in the slightest the fighters you mentioned above.
Maidana has gone from a contender to a trial horse. Alexander is not very much,,, or was not up to this fight. Maidana made him look like a
hall of famer.
Maidana did not win one round. That is pretty embarrassing.. Made to order for a boxer, puncher.
As you can tell, I never thought much of Maidana... remember he wanted to quit against Khan..

I don't remember Maidana wanting to quit against Khan. I remember Maidana getting dropped early in the fight by a Khan body shot, all the announcers were saying there was no way he was going to get up from that, but Maidana jumped back up, showed a lot of heart, and come close to knocking Khan out at the end of the fight. No doubt, Maidana is lacking skills, but if you start looking at who he has beat or fought close fights with and who they have went on to beat, you will see the whole field is weak. Maidana, Oritiz, Peterson, Bradley, Khan, Berto, and Alexander are nowhere near being close to being on that elite level. I guess as fans, we are going to have to deal with it for now. Maybe some of these guys will eventually improve or someone will come out of nowhere and just terrorize these divisions.
