May 5 or June 9 is still months away. There are several fights worth forgetting about bowling or poker.
Before we get to Maidana and Alexander, there is ALEXANDER POVETKIN taking on a young prospect, MARCO HUCK. Here is the scoop:
TUTTGART, Germany — WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck of Germany is moving up to the heavyweight level against undefeated Alexander Povetkin.
He’ll step into the ring 20 pounds lighter (209) than the Russian, who will defend his WBA title on Saturday night.
German boxer Marco Huck, left, and Russian WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin pose at the weighing in Stuttgart, southern Germany, Friday Feb. 24, 2012. The title bout is scheduled for Saturday Feb. 25, 2012. (Streamed live on EPIX and Boxnation at 4:00 pm EST. RAMON-PR also tells me it is on Channel 380!!! Thanks, Ramon! ENJOY)
“In the end it won’t be my weight that’s decisive, but my punch,” Huck said. (Huck is impressive at Cruiserweight with a high 71.43% of KO but will that be enough to handle Povetkin?)
Povetkin will make his second defense of the title he claimed by defeating Ruslan Chagaev last August.
It had been Wladimir Klitschko’s title following the Ukrainian’s victory over David Haye the month before, but was declared vacant when the WBA elevated Klitschko to “super champion” status.
The Yugoslav-born Huck is 34-1 (25 KOs) heading into the bout at the Porsche Arena.
“Povetkin is good, but I can beat him,” Huck said. “We once did sparring together and he has bad memories of me. On Saturday, I will be the new champ. He is going down.”
Povetkin, whose record of 23 wins includes 16 knockouts, was unfazed by Huck’s show of confidence.
“At first I was surprised about Huck’s challenge because he has never fought at heavyweight before,” he said. “But I am happy to defend my title against anybody out there. I am in great shape and I will win.”
It will be the Russian’s first bout without respected American coach Teddy Atlas since 2009. But Povetkin said training in his home city of Chekhov with new coach Alexander Zimin was “very good.”
“There is a good chemistry between us and we get along very well,” Povetkin said.
Zimin believes his fighter is “20 to 30 percent stronger than in his last fight,” an eighth-round knockout of American challenger Cedric Boswell.
“But the best is yet to come. He has got great potential,” he added, looking ahead to a possible bout against one of the Klitschko brothers, who have a stranglehold on the heavyweight division.
WHO IS ADRIEN BONER?http://www.boxingscene.com/uploads/49917/AlexanderMaidanaFinalPC_Hoganphotos.jpg
Well, he is quite impressive - a Mayweather look-a-like - who demolished Jason Litzau last June, 2011. He's got speed; he's got the moves; he is very busy in the ring. He will take on Eloy Perez, undefeated, from Salinas, California (23-0, 7 KO). Perez is no bum. He is quite skillful. It will be a test for Boner, who is 3 years younger at 22.
ALEXANDER/MAIDANA
(By the way, both will be shown on HBO at 10 pm EST.)
Who do you like? Both have had some "bad outings" during the last two years. Alexander did poorly against Tim Bradley when he was expected before that to be an "outstanding prospect". Maidana was manhandled by Amir Khan. They are schedule to fight in St. Louis, Missouri at 147 lbs. (welterweight).
Here is a report by Darren Velaso:
On February 25th, two light welterweight contenders are set to clash in Saint Louis, Missouri in a 10-round welterweight showdown. While both fighters have shown prominence in the light welterweight division, Marcos Maidana and Devon Alexander will take another stab at the 147 lb landscape. During each of their careers they have fluctuated between 140 and 150 with more focus on the earlier so the welterweight limit could equate to some intriguing dynamics
The headlining label is “Thunder and Lightning”, which may be the most appropriate association for a matchup so far this year. Argentina’s Marcos Maidana (31-2, 28 KOs) will go toe-to-toe with the hometown star Devon Alexander (22-1, 13 KOs) in St. Louis. With an undercard filled with tremendous young talent, this matchup could bring the standard to a supernatural level.
The classic boxer-puncher clash will be in full effect and quite possibly showcased in its most extreme degree this Saturday at the Scottrade Center. Alexander, who is known for his quickness and accuracy, is most accustomed to hearing the final bell while Maidana has had the scorecards read to him only five times in his career. Expected tactics going into this bout could not be anymore diverse with a point-seeking speedster and a headhunting brawler.
Saturday’s bout presents two of the most dissimilar combatants in a fight that will catapult the victor into huge upcoming fights and could stain the loser’s resume for any future opportunities. This is, quite possibly, the best fight that either fighter could hope for because of their individual unfortunate history. Both contending hopefuls are coming off of recent defeats to some of the division’s big names in Timothy Bradley, Amir Khan, and Andriy Kotelnyk so Saturday will be a form of redemption and possible reemergence.
The anticipated battle between Marcos Maidana and Devon Alexander will not be about who is stronger or who is quicker but it will showcase whose department will narrate the fight. The welterweight bout will discover whether speed can zoom past power or if strength can raze fundamental accuracy and swiftness.
IF IT GETS A LITTLE BORING, well.....you can catch Frank Edgar take on Benson Henderson/ Rampage Jackson challenge Ryan Bader - UFC 144.
