The hacker group Anonymous has again taken aim at Vic Toews, releasing a video defending the Liberal staffer blamed for the Vikileaks30 Twitter account and threatening to release more personal information about the Public Safety Minister on Friday.
“The Liberal party has either fired or forced out the individual behind the Vikileaks account, despite the fact that they committed no crime, in a shameful act of political cowardice,” says a computer-generated female voice in the video.
“Fellow Canadians, our own government is attempting to intimidate its citizens from not engaging in legal forms of protest by using their power to have them forced from their jobs and called before parliamentary committees.”
Vikileaks30, created last month, published personal details of Mr. Toew’s divorce, criminal history and spending habits, most of which appeared to be gleaned from public documents.
The online campaign was created in response to Bill C-30, legislation championed by Mr. Toews, which critics contend will increase internet surveillance of regular citizens.
The Conservatives blamed the NDP for the account after an Ottawa Citizen investigation linked the IP address associated with the Twitter account to the House of Commons.
But the Tories had to apologize when interim Liberal leader Bob Rae announced the culprit, Adam Caroll, was a researcher from his own party who resigned.
Mr. Rae issued his own apology, which Mr. Toews accepted. But the minister went back to Twitter to call out Liberal MP Justin Trudeau for encouraging the personal attack against him.
The Tories have said they plan to call Mr. Carroll before an ethics committee, but on Thursday gave the Liberals five more days to reveal what they knew about the Twitter account before Mr. Caroll resigned.
The Anonymous video urges Canadians to start tweeting, emailing and phoning Mr. Toews and other MPs to defend the creator of Vikileaks30, and to stop the government “from spying on all of Canada.”
In a previous video posted by the group, they demanded Mr. Toews scrap the Protecting Children from Internet Predators Act and step down as Safety Minister.
