A Toronto school teacher whose home was targeted by vandals has undergone emergency surgery at Sunnybrook Hospital after he was struck by a vehicle.
The 39-year-old, who has not been identified by police, was struck by a light-coloured minivan about 1 a.m. ET Wednesday outside his home on Barford Road, near Kipling Avenue and Albion Road.
Police said vandals had thrown eggs at the teacher's house, and he had gone outside carrying a baseball bat, looking to confront them..
"He was hiding behind a pole, waiting for the suspects to return," said Sgt. Colin Kay.
The man's wife "heard a vehicle approaching. It sounded … to be accelerating, and then there was the thump and she went out and he was laying on the roadway," Kay said.
The injured teacher was rushed to hospital. A statement from police said the injuries to his legs and back are considered serious but not life-threatening.
The minivan fled the scene. "There may be damage to the front end of the minivan as well as some broken tinted glass," police said.
"This is now being investigated as a fail to remain, serious injuries accident," said Kay.
Police are asking for any witnesses to come forward.
