View Full Version : How to extend a Serial/USB cable connection between STB & TV?

Hello all:

I'm looking to extend the distance between a serial to USB adapter cable by using a powered USB 2.0 to ethernet RJ45 adapter.

What I want to do is leave the computer in the den and run the signal thru an RJ45 ethernet cable thru the wall to the receiver and TV in another room. Is this possible?

I've seen these adapters listed as 1.0 & 2.0 in both powered and unpowered versions as options. If the above idea would work, does the 1.0 have the ability to transfer the data rate fast enough and what about it being powered or not?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Cheers :)

How long is the wire run, what type of STB? The reason I ask about the STB is most don't use all lines of the serial cable (9 wires) most STB only use two or three wires. Once you know how many conductor you need we can make a serial cable. Because the serial side of the USB to serial cable is low speed data it is best to make a long serial cable as opposed to a long USB cable. I just did a 25 foot cable for a VS using a shielded 3 conductor cable. Hope it helps

Hi Jet:

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't sure I would get a response as the posts get knocked down so fast and I don't think a lot of people look in some of the more fringe areas of this forum :)

I have a VS Ultra I'm looking to resurrect from door stop status using my PC and Linux, actually I have it running nicely at the moment in my computer room. I want to run a cable 30-40 feet to where the TV is and leave the PC where it is. Could I use something like this given I Knew which pins to use?:

and/or I also came across this as well which looked interesting:

If they do then it's just a case of ordering and haveing it sent to me.

Cheers :)

Here is what I did. I made a null cable modem cable out of an old 100 foot telephone cord. And it will do what you want. Now I am doing this from memory so bear with me. The telephone wire is 4 wires. Null modem needs 3 (twisted pair) and a ground. There are tons of diagrams around. I cut it down and ran it 40' under the baseboards.

It is simple a little solder alot of wire.

PS I made the 4th wire on the phone the ground like you would a jtag cable.

All you need is the DB-9 plugs (or jack and plug depending on the receivers requirements) and any 3, 4, 6, or 8 (cat 5) wire, for a direct cable solder pin 2 of one connector to pin 2 of the other, the same with 3 to 3, and pins 5 to 5, #5 is the ground.

To make a null modem cable, solder pin 2 of one to pin 3 of the other, and pin 3 to pin 2, pins #5 are the ground.

Using shielded CAT5 cable I have run up to 250 feet at 9600 BAUD without problems.

I would suggest using the DB-9 connectors with cable clamps to secure the cable.

Or, just buy the DB-9 to RJ45 null adapters....

Well okay if you want to take all the fun out of it and actually go and spend money lol I suppose you can do it the easy way.
