There have been reports of Manny Pacquiao might be getting close to retirement and calling an end to his 17 year career. It has been reported that Pacquiao told Filipino radio station DZMM that God told him in a dream that he should retire from the sport.

The news raises the question as to what would happen to a potential mega fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr and Pacquiao if he were indeed to walk away from boxing. BoxingScene.com spoke to Pacquiao’s head trainer Freddie Roach and asked about his thoughts regarding the news about Pacquiao’s possible retirement.

“The thing is we have a big fight coming up and hopefully Mayweather will have a good fight also with Cotto. That’ll draw them to fight each other. I would like to see Manny fight this fight then Mayweather and be over with it. I don’t see any point in going any further than that,” said Roach to BoxingScene.com.

“If Manny’s hungry to fight and wants to fight I’ll help him as long as possible. He asked me ‘When I’m finished, will you be the first one to tell me?’ I said ‘I definitely will’ and I said ‘Will you listen to me when I do?’ and he said ‘yes, I will.’”

Some think the Filipino superstar may already be showing signs of slowing down as they would point to his most recent fight against Mexican rival Juan Manuel Marquez. In a less than stellar performance, Pacquiao walked away with a split decision that many did not agree with.

“The last fight was the first fight we had a bad night in a long time. We had a great training camp though, we really did. It wasn’t nothing wrong with training and so forth. It’s just his focus wasn’t there the night of the fight. First time in 10 years. It does happen,” declared Roach.

A bad night indeed could happen to anyone and Pacquiao would be in a long line of fighters who could relate. While a bad night is understandable to Roach, if it were to happen it again then it might be some cause for concern.

“If that does happen again we’ll think about maybe making a decision at that point. But I think Manny is going to come out on fire this time. He’s got rid of a lot of distractions in his life that have been overwhelming on him. Just too much I think. I think he’s cleaned his life up and its going to really help his career,” said Freddie.

Regardless of what Pacquiao chooses to do, one thing is for sure and that is that he will be facing the undefeated Timothy Bradley in Las Vegas, NV at the MGM Grand on June 9th.

'3 Fights More,' Says Pacquiao

MANILA, Philippines — Cheer up, boxing fans. Manny Pacquiao is not hanging up his gloves anytime soon.

“Three fights pa,” Pacquiao told the Manila Bulletin Tuesday from Cebu where he will be taping two episodes of his weekly game show on GMA-7 in the coming days.

Pacquiao said he has to tape his shows in advance because he will soon start the first phase of his training in Baguio City for the June 9 showdown with Tim Bradley at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao said in a radio interview on Monday that he has spoken with God, who has told him to retire, as he has accumulated enough fortune and achieved fame no other Filipino athlete has.

While Pacquiao always mentions the word retirement in his recent speeches – majority of them laced with Biblical verses – the 33-year-old congressman from Saranggani made it clear it won’t be this year.

Should he get past Bradley – a fight ringsiders believe will be a walk-in-the-park for the Filipino star – Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum will line him up possibly against Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico, or against Floyd Mayweather, if both camps reach an agreement financially.

Arum had earlier expressed concern over Pacquiao’s behavior the past weeks, but is nevertheless confident that once he gets into training mode, his mood will change.

Pacquiao will spend three weeks in Baguio City and will wrap up the final stage at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood.

The fact that Pacquiao is giving himself three more fights is reason enough to believe that the country’s greatest fighter ever remains motivated and hungry for more adulation.

Even if Pacquiao doesn’t end up facing Mayweather, his reputation as an all-time great will not be affected and his standing as an “immortal” will remain.
