Erik Morales fails to make weight, loses WBC title on scales
March 23rd, 2012

By Jim Dower: A slightly flabby around the midsection Erik Morales (52-7, 36 KO’s) failed to make the 140 pound weight limit during Friday’s weigh-in with challenger Danny Garcia (22-0, 14 KO’s) for Saturday’s fight at the Reliant Arena in Houston, Texas. As such, the 35-year-old Morales lost his WBC light welterweight title on the scales.

Garcia, 23, will still have a chance to capture the now vacant World Boxing Council title, but Morales can’t win it. Morales weighed in at 142lb, two pounds over the weight limit. For his part, Garcia weighed in at 139.5lb.

Morales was likely to lose his WBC title to the bigger, stronger, faster and younger Garcia on Saturday anyway, so it’s not that big of a deal that the title is now gone. Morales doesn’t match up well with Garcia and will very likely take a beating on Saturday. It’s hard to say why Morales can’t get those stubborn pounds off of his midsection because the rest of his body looked skinny but you could see visible fat hanging off of the sides of Morales’ waistline and that shouldn’t have still been there after weeks and weeks of hard training.

Morales doesn’t have the frame to fight at welterweight and he’s going to have to make a big decision on his future if he can’t even make 140, which he’s not looked overly impressive at.

Other weights on the card:

James Kirkland 153.75 – Carlos Molina 153.75
Jose Luis Castillo 147.75 – Jose Miguel Cotto 144.5
Jamie Kavanagh 135.5 – Cesar Cisneros 133.5
Jermell Charlo 155 – Chris Chatman
Lenard Lane 143.5 – Milton Ramos 144.75
Jermall Charlo – Shawn Wilson

Doesnt look like Marquez is taking his comeback too seriously..
Nothing worse than a fighter with flab around the middle.. usually means they
did not train very hard.
He will probably lose and retire again.

I Guess Mortales is just in for the paycheque......I'll watch him get a beating anyway, and I'm probably more interested in the Kirkland bout before the Main event....nice Avy rudee!!

I Had Mortales (While Still looking at your Avatar) winning the fight early in the fight, after the first knockdown, I think Garcia turned It Around, and It was All his. Time to Retire, still give Mortales credit for giving the fans what They came in for and not just showing up to be a punching bag!!....

Mortales put up a good fight, but it is time for him to hang it up.

Garcia is a good little fighter... fast and hits hard.. but he is also there to be hit.... as Morales did nail him for the first 7 or 8 rounds... I read that MOrales
broke Garcia's nose pretty badly...
Morales is a true warrior.. anyone else woulda stayed down or just taken a knee in the 11th or 12th round..
But Morales is taking terrible punishment now...he is also looking terrible physically... no muscle at all...soft baby fat..
Time for the commision to step in and have a chat with him...
Glad for Ramon and Fib's paisano though... another champ!

Mortales got off easy last night, mostly because the old son of a gun still has some good boxing skills...amazing. No disrespect to Garcia, but a good fighter could have whooped Mortales last night, he wasn't in shape and his old body just won't get into the shape he needs to be competitive. I don't think he didn't try to lose the weight, but the older you get the harder it gets, your metabolism is not the same in 20 years. Eric in the day was one of my favorite fighters to watch, what a warrior. It's taken it's toll and now Eric, time for you to hang them up before you get hurt badly.

Anyhow, respect to Mortales who got up and put up a good showing in the early rounds and looked like he won more than the judges gave him.

I hope it's the last death of Mortales he needs to go through and we have to watch.

morales still got the boxing sence, but the speed and power just isnt there anymore... But man what a great boxer, he gave that young buck all he could handle, breaking his nose and his face was a bloody mess. I do think its time for el terrible to hang up the gloves as his speed and power just isnt there anymore... He came in pretty out of shape as well flab all over the place...

Thats right plastiki.... he came in way outta shape... but as i said in another post.... he did not go down and stay down..
He coulda just got counted out and noone woulda said anything nor blamed him...
But he got up and fought his way through to the end... as you said.. broke the guys nose
for his trouble..
Time for el terrible to hang it up... but he was one hell of a fighter that fought them ALL!!
And some twice or more!

Morales - one more fight

Four-weight world title holder Erik Morales is ready to end his 19-year boxing career following his unanimous points loss to WBC champion Danny Garcia on Saturday night in Houston, Texas.

The 35 year-old boxing legend, who fought for the 60th time against the unbeaten Garcia, is considering his options after failing to make the 140lb limit on the scales and being stripped of his belt outside the ring.

“I fought a young, hungry fighter," Morales stated after the fight. "Time has passed, and I have to evaluate if I'm going to keep doing this. I'm not going to keep fighting to lose. If I'm going to fight, I want to win."

According to BoxingScene.com today, Morales is hoping to fight once more in his home city of Tijuana later this year before his hangs up his gloves and brings the curtain down on a glittering career that will be fondly remembered for trilogies with Manny Pacquiao and Marco Antonio Barrera.

Yes,,, but you know what happens when you fight "one more" fight... you win it.... then you think you can continue
winning... Chavez and Duran and others did the same thing... just one more...
no,,, you gotta do what Haglar and Marciano did.... quit cold turkey!!!
Erik and I have one thing in common... our bodies look alike.... and that AIN"T good!
