Connecting iPad4 to HDMI

When I connect my generic lightning 30 pin adapter to my iPad4 I get a message saying "wrong format"
If I remove the adapter and connect the 30 pin straight to my iPhone 4 ,, I get picture ...
What do I have to do to get the generic lightning to work with my iPad 4 ...

(I've gone back to where I bought it and changed it twice already,,, still can't get it to work)
(I've spent some time surfing google looking for answers ,,, with no luck .... Yet)

Any helpers ?
