audio receiver balance question

the balance control knob is malfunctioning on my amp, sounds like it has dust or dirty contacts,, I never really used it to adjust the balance anyway
is it possible to just disconnect it by joining the wires that are for the right side and the same for the left side?

Sounds like if you do this then you may not have stereo it would be mono out of two sides. Have you tried to clean the contact with spraying alcohol and blowing it with a can of air?

They make a special rotary pot contact cleaner , it comes in a spray can.

This is what we used in engineering to clean the sliders on the big board.
