Revised 2017 F1 calendar trimmed to 20 races, avoids Le Mans clash

The FIA has issued a revised calendar for the 2017 Formula 1 season following the meeting of the World Motor Sport Council in Vienna, Austria on Wednesday.

As expected, the German Grand Prix has dropped off the schedule for the second time in three years after Hockenheim was unable to come to an agreement with F1 officials to host the race.

The Brazilian Grand Prix was thought to be in doubt amid negotiations between F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone and track officials, but has now been confirmed to be going ahead in 2017.

With Germany falling off the calendar, the mid-summer rounds have shifted dates that now ensure there will be no clash between Le Mans and the grand prix in Baku, Azerbaijan as there was in 2016.

The Baku race has now been renamed the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, having been held as the European Grand Prix in 2016 for its inaugural running.

After Germany’s demise, the races in Azerbaijan, Austria, Great Britain and Hungary will all be held one week later than originally planned, before the summer break at the end of August.

The races in Singapore and Malaysia have swapped dates from the provisional schedule, while the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas sticks to its October 22 date as planned. It will however now be back-to-back with Mexico, which had originally been set for two weeks after the race at the Circuit of The Americas.
