HP 450 G1 notebook on starting up - clicking sound

I notice when starting up my HP 450 G1 notebook that there is a somewhat "clicking" sound coming from the area of the DVD drive. There is no CD/DVD in there, but that clicking noise is heard only on start-up.
Why is that, and how can this be remedied.

Agreed...& take it out of the boot sequence to see if it is the drive.

clicking sounds usually means the start of Hard Drive issues, if it's "NOT" a SSD drive

Has this been going on since you bought it??

Or has this just started??

If it's been doing this since day one then follow Dishuser's advice and check the boot sequence. Set it to boot from the hard drive first.

If it just started then something may be wrong with the DVD or hard drive.

Thanks to all who had an input in this discussion.

The DVD drive is shown in the BIOS, first slot. The DVD drive icon is shown in the "my computer" section, and when I click "open", it opens up, so I do not believe there is a mechanical failure here. I cleaned inside the drive to take out any possible dust built-up etc.

The drive is not an SSD DVD drive. When I insert a working DVD, it does not play. I am concerned about this, but not overly worried as I have other options, like replacing it with a working internal DVD drive, or using an external DVD drive.

I use Windows 10 Professional with the HP Probook 450 G1, and I have read that Windows 10 does not always recognize the DVD. Newer laptops/notebooks no longer have the DVD facility . Is this correct? I also read that there is a some "software" that can correct this problem.

right click on the Start menu and select Device Manager

select your DVD drive and right click on it to see the available options

you can uninstall the device and let windows reinstall it after you restart or if you do not want it to be reinstalled select disable

Advise

Try moving it down to the second slot in the BIOS, it may be tiring to boot from the DVD drive.

As too the DVD not working, you should go to the manufactures web site and look for updated DVD drivers for windows 10/11
