reciever help and advice

I have been away for over a year and have VS ultra
to get the weather i need a new viewsat WS add on...about $100
Is it feasible or more practical to look at different recievers that will work better or as a stand alone before i purchase this WF for my reciever?

I know this might not be the right spot for my question/discussion...but there doesnt seem to be a general area for discussing all recievers together.

I have been dowm for many years and am looking to try again. have ultra veiwsat. have been reading posts that they are working. can you recommend a x-fta router to use? or will anyone do?
