By doing it this way you'll loose half your bandwidth (i.e 54 mbps down to @ 27 mbps), if you cascade them (hard wired from 1 of the 4 LAN ports on main router to 1 of the 4 LAN ports one the secondary router (NOT The WAN port! .... and you can disable WAN input on secondary router) you can retain the 54 mbps speed. If 27mbps is fast enough for what you are doing then it saves running a wire between routers. If you are using "newer routers" (Wireless-N or above) then half speed shouldn't be an issue

so my update.

i bought a router off kijiji for 40 dollars, its only a router they said it could do the repeater but it cant.

i hard wired it in my living room. well now my wifi is great for our phones and i went to the garage and did an internet speed test with the buzz 2000 i have out there, ill put the 3000 eventually

got 12 mbps in there. tried again tonight but with the garage door open and it was 35 mbps......lol
cable internet is always up and down.


will be great in the summer should still be okay with the door closed too.7
but i will keep watching the kijiji to see if i can get an even better one to see if it can get better.

This is why I use the high powered Ampedwireless routers, I get full speed no matter where I am on the property.

They may be a bit expensive but they work, you can also add high gain omni or directional external antennas to increase the range, they also offer repeating functions.

now i want to really try that one I'll start to save my pennies

Has anyone pondered DD-WRT or Tomato firmware for their routers? An el cheapo used Linksys, Cicsco router laying around is a prime candidate. I'm blowing wifi to a garage with a re-purposed dish from my house about 250 feet away and signal is great. Bandwidth and speed is very good.
There are many ready to go repeaters out there but the most fun thing is flashing custom firmware in old routers and opening up what should have been there in the first place. For free!

I just set this up for sending internet from one house to the other, probably around 800 feet distance.

well they have 25 to 30 mbps and at other house i see the same speed. It really does work great so far. I had to watch a few youtube videos to help me to set it up.

so your isp is 25 mbps and the second house is getting the same so no loss?


i'm just saying because i have 150 and would like to get more then 25 to the garage thats what im getting now i think

yes seems no loss on second house. you can do some research on point to point.

It's not getting to the garage with high enough speed, but getting back from the garage to the router with enough speed.

Remember this is a two way street, the router may be seen with enough speed buy the computer (or other WIFI device) out in the garage, but is the data from that device getting back to the router at the same speed?

Using a high powered router at the house and a high powered WIFI device at the garage will fix a lot of connection speed problems.

Out in my shop (1000 feet from the house) I now use an Amped Wireless UA 1000 directional (directional antenna) USB WIFI adapter on the laptop, it lets me see the house and gets the data back to the house without any speed loss. (the shop also has metal walls)

As mentioned by a previous poster, I use a D-Link network extender. One unit is at my router and the other plugs into a normal socket anywhere. The provided network cable connects it to my tv box and gives me a LAN hookup which is stable and fast. No worries about wifi speeds.
