Promoter Bob Arum is once again hyping up the long desired Mayweather vs. Pacquiao superfight, telling fans the fight may happen within the next year.
For boxing fans, the Holy Grail of today's fight scene has long been one elusive fight: Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao. Mayweather and Pacquiao are the undeniable two biggest marquee names and greatest talents of this era, and the fact that they fight in the same general weight class means a fight between these two titans has long been discussed. Sadly though, it's never become a reality, and most boxing fans have come to accept that they will just have to deal with this as a golden opportunity forever lost to the ages.
Now, Top Rank head and Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum is rekindling the flames of Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. On the press tour for the November 22 Manny Pacquiao vs Chris Algieri PPV fight, Arum told the San Francisco Chronicle that, in regards to Mayweather vs. Pacquiao:
Both networks [HBO and Showtime] want this fight to happen. All signs seem to point to the fight happening early next year.
Talk about this fight first began really heating up back in 2009, and since then there have been various points where "all signs seem to point to the fight happening", but for a variety of complex reasons, it never has. Were it to happen next year, it would be a massive fight - not as massive as it would have been prior to Pacquiao's loss to Juan Manuel Marquez and "loss" to Timothy Bradley - but still big.
But if history is any indication, the chances of that actually happening are slim. Don't hold your breath on this one folks.
Pacquiao next fights on November 22 against Chris Algieri, while Mayweather rematches Marcos Maidana on September 13. Stay tuned to Bloody Elbow for full coverage of both PPV encounters.
