If you haven't messed with your box, it's best to send it to Microsoft.
DO NOT DO the "throw the box under a bunch of towels" approach that is flying around on you tube.
If you have messed with your box, there are some really good step by step videos on how to permanently fix this that involve tearing the box apart, cleaning off the "goo" from the chips, doing the overheat reset while the box is actually apart, replacing the goo, possibly adding some screws/washers? and putting the box back together again. It's in like 8 parts. I researched this for some time for a friend of mine till I found out he could still send his box back in. I told him to just send it in.
If its not modded just send it back.If it is modded then you need to fix the heat sinks.
Here is a pdf that THINK-O posted on another site.Depending on the age of your xbox it should work.

If your Xbox is still under warranty (which I think has been extended to three years because of this known design flaw) send it back to Microsoft, as there is a tamper proof sticker inside that will void the warranty once tampered with.Quote:

I have fix a few myself and I can help you too.
Send it to Microsoft if you still have warranty. If not, you can buy a $20 X-clamp fix. This fix only lasted me 2 months. In the 2 months I had to apply the fix 3 times. So first see if you have warranty or not. My 360 is just sitting here with the rrod. Every-time I apply the fix now, it only lasts 1-2 minutes so I'm guessing it's done for. So make sure you use the X-clamp fix as a last resort.
Not sure what this $20 X-clamp fix is that you speak of, and what they promise you for a fix, but I can tell you that the biggest issue here is that the main processor, and video processor chips become "unsoldered" from the PC board, due to poor design of the cooling, in conjuction with the factory installed X-clamps.Quote:

Yeah. The X-Clamp fix is pretty much a bottle of ArtiClean 1 Thermal Material Remover, ArtiClean 2 Thermal Surface Purifier, Articsilver 5 thermal paste, and screws and standoffs. You remove the thermal paste that microsoft applied with #1 then clean the surface with #2. You then use the ArticSilver 5 thermal paste and resit the gpu and cpu using the screws and standoffs. A heat gun with this method just like you said would help a lot. I didn't have a heat gun so I couldn't reheat my chips. That is probably why mine stopped working again.Quote:

You know what i cant figure out... that microsoft knows about this heat issue .. but it still keeps happening..WTF..that is why i bought a brand new PsP 3 for my kid for Christmas...and it has a Blu-ray built in ..and free on line gaming.what does X-box give u.lol..i will be picking up a x-box used after the holidays ..and mod the chit out of it ..give me a foking break Mr.Gates

that is why the nex xbox has the gpu and cpu in an all in
one chip now... However we will see how well that works...
I recently revammped mine... I got extended cables and
what i did was mount the dvd player to the outside of the
case The problem is the gpu is SMOTHERED!!!! I mean SMOTHERED BAD!
So what i did Was removed the old heatsync and Replaced it with the
Gen 2 CPU heatsync... Yes the Cpu Heat sync the big aluminum one
I will take a photo of mine and i modded the airtube with ductape and
i have not had a Problem out of mine and My Kid plays the thing
for hours and hours and it is a 2006 model... I will try to upload
some photos!
Plus reorienting the drive outside the box makes it easier to flash!!!

just to let you know ,, yesterday i called the 1-800 number for x-box
and spoke to someone regarding the 3 red lights ,, the person at the
other end of the phone couldn't be more helpful and understanding to
the problem ,, it took me all but 5 minutes talking with him to conclude
the he was putting in a request for me to receive a new (refurbished)
xbox360 ,,
my box was manufactured in 2007 ,, i bought it some time in 2008 and
eventhough my warranty had expired i was told that,, in the event of
the 3 red lights, the warrenty was extended to 3 years... i was not even
asked when i bought my unit (even though i am sure they knew from my
registartion) microsoft even paid for the shipping..
their service is excellent and easy ,, so my suggestion is, don't even try
messing around with trying to fix your unit ,,, unless you call them first

I fixed mine and it's new again. The problem will happen again to you when you get it back. The problem lies in the design of the board. When the xbox heats up the board flexes and the contacts become loose. When you over heat the xbox it reloads the solder. It will fail again. Doing the RROD fix not only puts pressure on the board so that it does not come loose. Those x clamps come loose and hence the joints become loose. Get the bolts and it works soooo much better. Been playing the xbox for 3 years now and no problems. Good luck. Oh by the way I only paid 12 bux for everything.!!!

i remove the 360 gpu and reball with lead solider and solves the issue, m$ got cheap and used crappy leadfree soldier causes more problems
