I would do a VOIP speed test to see if you connection speed is high enough to use VOIP.

Look here for a test to do that.

Move the adapter away from rest of computer equipment, have had service for few years and started with phones that were not very friendly with system then learned wanted adapter 5 feet or so away from other equipment. Now that my cable services offer voip finally about ready to dump them if cable can say phone calls will not dog my internet speed but otherwise been pretty happy with their service and saved me about 50% over old AT&T services at the time.

The new magic jack plus is great. Stand alone no computer required plugs directly into modem. Calls are clear as a bell.
Got mine off of Fleabay for cheap

I would recommend enabling QoS on whatever port your VOIP adapter is connected to (you do this through your router's admin console). This will give traffic to/from that port priority over the others, so other traffic on the network is less likely to interfere with your VOIP traffic.
