Diatomaceous earth works like a charm.
Go to your local feed store and buy a 40lb bag for 20 bucks. It is safe and non toxic and shreds any bug that crosses it's path.
If your not eating things out of that garden then use the stuff I use, it's called "Triazicide" from Spectracide, you can mix it with water to their spec's, or mix it strong and pour it down the hole.
Then when mixed in a sprayer you can spray around the yard with it, I spray around my whole yard twice a year with the stuff, if you can find the good stuff, one bottle will make 25 gallons.
Bad thing is that the stuff the tree huggers let you have around here now only covers 16,000 square feet, not much good stuff left anymore.

I found an effective non toxic poison bait online that I used called OK Ant Killer. It came in very tiny packets. The way it worked was as a hallucinogenic. The ants would turn on each other and fight to the death. It was harmless to use otherwise. Every time I used it, I wouldn't see any ants for months. But the only way and thing that finally ended the ant problems completely was cutting down a large pine tree that seemed to be a focal point for them I recommend this ant bait highly. It worked well for me and unlike other bait solutions or using gas and oil, it is environmentally friendly. If I had been a little more aggressive using the bait, I would have eliminated all of them using the bait alone.

A clean way to get rid of most Ants is just get a large bottle of Dawn Dish Detergent and mix with water in a sprayer, strong enough for the liquid to stay blue and fill the Ant hole full and they will be gone !!!!!!
detergent doesn't really work, it really is only temporary.
