You will need the dongle and a PS code, and you will find the file needed in the file sec.

Even cheaper, you can use your own PC as a dongle.

I do think that having a PC hook to the Power all day is expensive.

friend if you get the x-fta router you won,t have to be hookup to the laptop or computer you just hookup the internet service to the xfta-router and box to your tv and put the private server info, and you have tv....

Depending on how your pc/laptop runs using the rs232 cable might slow it down to get the channels. Yes I agree on getting a usb Dongle which gives you the best option and speed to get the channels to come up faster. You can even buy a wifi bridge and use it wireless and use a 5v adapter to the wifi bridge adapter so you can still utilize the usb port for PVR.

is there anything stopping the use of the CW brand dongle? like just a USB-Ethernet wire adapter? or a USB hub with ethernet plug?

or does it have to use the null serial?

i see cheap adapters like these
    Serial RS-232 adapter - RJ-45 (F)?
