Default Ubuntu 12.10 USB modem problems

    OK all you Ubuntu experts.

I need some help that I cant get across the guys at the Ubuntu forums.

I'm repairing a laptop for an older gentleman, this thing crashed hard, the hard drive took a big one and we can't recover the OS for it, it orignaly came with Vista, he could not get use to it so he sent it back to Dell and had them install XP on it.

Now without the original install disks this thing is dead, I have installed Ubuntu on it and it works well.....EXCEPT.......For the USB dial up modem, that is the only way he can access the internet from his location, I can get the WIFI to work but he does not have WIFI, nor DSL.

So after about 5 days on that Ubuntu form I have got nowhere fast.

I can see the USB modem listed when I do that Ls command in terminal, and have followed to the letter all instructions to do it via the terminal program, but now way can I get to the modem or find the modem or load anything to do this for me, I am lost.

I an not a programmer, and everything I see to help out with this is all programming Greek to me.

Is there some program that will run on Ubuntu that will detect this modem? And install it so I can set it up so he doesn't have to become an expert Ubuntu programmer to run it?

All I want to do is when he runs Fire Fox it will dial up his ISP and connect, or when he is in town use the WIFI card to connect, the guys at the Ubuntu forums can't wrap their heads around the fact that someone is still using a dial up modem, all they tell me how to do this is via a DSL or mobile card.

    Anyone have an idea?????

Just guessing here, but I wonder if maybe there's some kind of USB-serial bridge inside that modem that's not playing nice with Ubuntu? Did it show up as another COM port under Windows?

I just tried it on my laptop, (running XP) it worked fine, it's a USB modem and it showed up in the system hardware as a USB device.

OK got it going (somehow) I don't know what I did but I downloaded a bunch of stuff from Ubuntu, several networking programs were included.

When I went back to detect the modem ""WALLA"" it found the /ttyACM0 modem dialed and connected, I wish I knew what program did it so I can post it back at the Ubuntu web site but I have absolutely no idea what one did the job for me.

Now all I do is click on the Gnome PPP dialer and it connects to his dial up ISP, then click on FF or IE and it's on the net.

Thanks to all that tried to help, now for some real sleep.
