Make Windows 7 Look Just like Windows 8.1 with This Free App

If you're still running Windows 7, but you like the new Windows 8 look more and you don't want to upgrade to this new OS version for your own reasons, there's still an option to make your old computer look like it's running the modern version of Windows.

Called Windows 8 UX Pack 8.1, this freeware application can change the OS theme, the logon screen, the desktop wallpaper and even implement a Metro UI that mimics the one available on Windows 8.

At the same time, it also comes with some options that could make it look like you are running Windows 8, including a Metro PC settings screen allowing you to access the essential Control Panel settings.

Version 8.1 also comes with a few improvements and adds some system programs that could be missing in Windows, while also updating the Windows 7 visual style with the Aero 8 theme created by aymengh99.

“Windows 8 UX Pack will give you Windows 8 UI improvements such as theme and logon screen without touching system files at all so it won’t have such risk to harm your system at all. In this package, you’ll have Windows 8 inspired themes and applications to make your system resembles Windows 8 as much as possible without modifying system files,” the developer behind the project explained.

Making Windows 7 look like Windows 8, however, might be a bit surprising because many users have already criticized Microsoft for making the modern operating system flat and giving up on some previously-introduced features such as Aero Glass effects.

At the same time, many have criticized the Modern UI for being too much focused on touch-capable devices, but in case you do decide to install this app, no touch capabilities would be provided, so you'll have to stick to a mouse and keyboard as the main input methods.

Keep in mind, though, that it might slow down your computer a little bit, so make sure that you create a system backup before installing it, just in case you wish to restore the system back to a previous state if you're now satisfied with the result. The application only works on Windows 7, with both 32- and 64-bit versions currently being supported.

In the end, this is quite a nice way to give a try to the new Windows 8 appearance without actually installing the operating system, so download Windows 8 UX Pack 8.1 right now to see what it's up to.
