Default Peyton Manning to retire after 18 NFL seasons

    AP

Peyton Manning surveyed the landscape of his brilliant career and called on last audible. He's retiring a champion.

A month after Denver's triumph in Super Bowl 50, Manning informed John Elway he's going to follow his lead and ride off into that orange sunset just like the Broncos' boss did 17 years ago after winning his second Super Bowl.

With a Tuesday deadline looming, it began to appear as though Manning might want to play another season but for another team - the Broncos needed his hefty salary for other players, including his replacement. He would have had to get cut for a second time in his career.

    It never came to that.

He called Elway, team president Joe Ellis and coach Gary Kubiak on Saturday night and told them he's decided to retire, a person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press.

The person, who was briefed on the matter, spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the quarterback and the team were still working out details of an announcement. Chris Mortensen of ESPN first reported the decision Sunday morning.

Just shy of 40, Manning will forgo $19 million and a 19th season in the NFL, where he served as both a throwback and a transformer during a glittering career bookmarked by an unprecedented five MVP awards and dozens of passing records.

Manning leaves the league he helped popularize to super-size status as its all-time leading passer and winningest starting quarterback, the only one in NFL history to win Super Bowls with two franchises.

His first came in 2007 with the Indianapolis Colts, who drafted him No. 1 overall in 1998. The Colts gave up on him after a series of neck surgeries forced Manning to miss all of the 2011 season and left him without feeling in the fingertips of his right hand.

A rare superstar quarterback on the open market in 2012, Manning resettled in Denver, where, despite a right arm weakened by nerve damage, he went 50-15 with his fifth MVP award and two trips to the Super Bowl in four seasons.

He lost his first one, to Seattle, and won his second, 24-10 over the Carolina Panthers.

A sad day for football indeed.Weather you liked him or not, he was arguably the greatest 1/4 back of all time.I was never really a Manning fan,but his accomplishments speak for themselves.
His classiness was exemplified by the fact that he didn't spoil the super bowl moment by announcing his retirement during the victory celebrations...class act indeed.Safe to say that the next Denver starter has HUGE shoes to fill.
Outstanding job, Mr Manning.Enjoy your retirement in the best of health.

He definitely had an awesome career and one of the best of all time. He brought my Broncos to the dance twice and thank god for that nasty defense. With what I saw this past year, he can suit up for the Rams if he wants but his age finally caught up with him. Looking forward to the Ossweiler/Siemian era.

Not likely brother.........and i hope your wrong.

He needs to retire permanently now, not as an old QB in a new team past his days but as one of the best there ever was.

    Period.

Well stated....I didn't blow his horn too much over the superbowl victory because the D did win that game.I guess I was helping him reflect on his career.

I`ll agree 100% with both you and Costactc that he should by all means retire because he hasn`t been the Manning that produced winners for the last couple years since the surgery. Indication that you are both right is the fact he`s giving up @ $19 million NOT to play for the Broncos next season.................however the new L.A. Rams could use a big draw and we`ve all seen stranger things happen for the $$$$$$$ that would be involved.
Note.....I didn`t say it would happen, I said don`t be too surprised if it did. I wouldn`t.

The Rams did show interest in Manning to QB their team after the relocation ,, if they bring him on, they may offer
him a position within the franchise for promotional purposes, but I don't believe he'll be throwing balls.

I and more importantly Manning knows he can't play anymore. As the report above points out, after the surgeries
Manning was left with nerve damage in his hand which was CLEARLY evident in last year's play. I am confident
when I say Manning didn't win a game all season. In fact he confessed this himself in an early interview, when
he said he wasn't sure how they've gone 6-0 and praised the defence for their success, not much later Osweiler
    took over.

The Broncos with Manning, should have never gotten past Pittsburgh and were it not, for the football gods, they
wouldn't have gotten past the Patriots,,, let's not forget that 3 field goals and the Patriots win 21-20 ....

Manning had a stallar game verses the Panthers,,,, other than that he was throwing pancakes all season.

He's was a hall of fame career and he will be known as 1 of the best to play the game.
