What the last poster is trying to say is that the modulation method used in the past for the DN provider has changed and the older boxes can't do that modulation.
What FTA channels are popular depends on what you like to watch--what you like to watch may not be the same. There are lots of channels on 97 degree sat--many in other languages, many religious channels, only a few in english all the time. Some folks like Oldies channels and there are some on other satellites--many more on C band sats like 101 degree. Lyngsat has lists of what is open maybe you should look at that site's info.
Some older boxes can do some of DSS signals on 101 Ku--no IKS at this time but you could get all the audio as it is not encrypted on that provider.
