    Default AC help needed

OK Kid's, I have a York AC unit (split unit) that will not start, the fan and condenser motor do nothing, I checked all fuses and breakers, and tested the contactor, all look to be working fine as I get 220 VAC to the unit, 110 on all sides of the contactor.

So thinking it may be a bad dual capacitor (cheapest part in the unit) I replaced it, (same type and rating) and nothing.....I hear the contactor drop in when I turn the thermostat to cool, but nothing happens, no fan, no condenser motor...ZIP.

Anyone have any ideas???? I hate to have to go with a service guy and find out I need a new AC unit, and have to pay for a service call... not in this years budget......Or not even the next ten years budget.

And it's going to be 101 degrees F here by Sunday....

    HELP.......Terryl

I think you meant the compressor motor? But I'm guessing it's the compressor as the fan probably won't start if the compressor doesn't. Check the continuity through the compress motor.

    clean the condenser coil
it might just be a high pressure switch tripped.

could have went out on high head pressure if your having a heat wave and the coil out side was not cleaned

    might just need a reset.

It's a split unit, the heater is inside and the AC condenser unit is outside, heater works fine, and the controller unit in the inside part is closing the compressor contactor.

My big question is why doesn't the fan spin??? It's on a separate circuit, I have good AC voltage to everything, waiting for it to cool down on that side of the house, will try and take a look for any reset on the compressor motor unit.

First time it's been started this year, worked great last time it was used, will look for stuff in the coil when I get it apart.

I knew you had a split unit I was wanting to know if thermosat would start heater or just run the fan.

Push the contact manually it has to start. That by passes stat and low/high pressure controls, if it doesn't start you don't have 230v.

Posting a .pdf of the exact circuit topology will give us a better chance of helping you.

Cant find anything to reset, nothing opn the compressor motor housing, it looks to be a sealed unit, and the contactor is pulling in, the contactor has 110VAC on both sides,(220 volt unit) and all 4 connections (power in and out) when pulled in.

Trying to read the circuit diagram is hard as most of it is faded out, will look on-line for one, I'm setting up to do a wire by wire circuit trace to see if one or more are open, we do have a field mice problem around here, they like to chew on things.

If anyone has access to one the model # is a York H2RA036S06E, a 220 volt single phase unit.

You can bypass safety reset switches most times 24v red wires back to the board or contacts to see if one of them is not giving you curent to allow everything else to work I would eliminate the reset switches with a jumper then go to the thermostat contacts in the ac unit try jumping them, see if you got proper voltages. if still nothing happens and all these things are working fine most likely electronic board maybe be the culprit ? as for the compressor should be able to manually wire it to test it on and off works or don't. there is a youtube vid with york ac units to troubleshoot . good luck bro

I found the problem, the contactor had one bad point on it, this thing is in a very tight place and was hard to see the burnt out contact, it was found during a point to point wiring check.

I tested the unit while the AC was hot, (don't try this at home kids unless you know what your doing) I found AC voltage on all points of the contactor main connections with the contactor de-energized, this didn't sound right till I looked at the circuits, the dual cap was supplying enough voltage for a false reading.

With the AC disconnected and all caps shorted out a continuity check was done, that is when I found the burnt contact, (open circuit on one pole when contactor manually operated and outputs disconnected) it was the one side that was very hard to see as it was the one against the wall of the control case.

Using a contactor I had for a 3 phase saw I by-passed the one inside the AC unit and it works fine, too bad the contactor I have on hand wont fit inside the case, oh well another trip to town.

Thanks to all that helped out, Terryl
